MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey woman who was struck in the face with a baseball at a Little League game is suing the young catcher who threw it.

Elizabeth Lloyd is seeking more than $150,000 in damages to cover medical costs stemming from the incident at a Manchester Little League game two years ago. She's also seeking an undefined amount for pain and suffering.

Lloyd was sitting at a picnic table near a fenced-in bullpen when she was hit with the ball.

Catcher Matthew Migliaccio was 11 years old at the time and was warming up a pitcher.

I worked for a summer in a juvenile court during law school. Juvenile court judges often give kids "sentences" that you'd never see given in district court. The judges almost see themselves as a parent to some of these kids. Its funny to hear them ask the kids in detail about their school work, and how they are treating their siblings, etc.

All in all, I wouldn't call what this judge did "asinine," though. I did find it amusing.

So...apparently not enough people are using food stamps. And the federal government has decided to spend $3 million in advertising to get them to do so.

              Why?

I mean, are they making it? Are they starving to death?

Even at a time of difficult budgets and deficits, I understand wanting to provide the benefit to those who need it. I'm not sure I understand adding the expense of advertising it and attempting to get MORE people to use it.

All government agencies have a built in incentive to spend every dime possible. If they don't spend their allocated money, there will be strong political pressure to cut their budget. The last thing bureacrats are worried about is the federal budget.

I see what you're saying. But wouldn't the guy in charge of these government agencies want to pay attention to this? I mean, if the guy in charge wants some good publicity - all it would take is to say "Hey! Fewer people are using food stamps! That means more people are able to make it on their own! Look! Things are getting better!"

But even worse, I'm afraid the reality is not that they are afraid of losing budget due to not spending it all. It seems like when I first heard this on the news they were saying that they anticipated an increasing budget due to added need and wondering where the extra money was going to come from.

So they are spending $3 mil to convince people to help them spend even more money that they don't have.

Well it goes to what you think the role of government is. Some think the role of government is to take care of people. Those people honestly believe the more people on food stamps the better, because they think that they wouldn't eat if they weren't on food stamps. That of course isn't the case a lot of the time.

To tie this topic back in with the thread title:

Clerk Reprimanded for refusing EBT payment for cigarettes

Whiton said a young man came in to the store to buy two packs or cigarettes on May 29. When she asked him for his ID, he handed her his EBT card.

EBT cards are used for both food and cash assistance programs. There are two types of cards: one can only be used for food. The other can be spent on anything and used just like a debit card.

Whiton said she did not think EBT cards could be used to purchase cigarettes and refused to sell to him. The two “had a little go-around” as the line got longer behind him, said Whiton.

“I made the statement, ‘do you think myself, that lady and that gentlemen should pay for your cigarettes?’ and he responded ‘yes,’ ” Whiton said.

The next day Whiton said the customer’s foster mother came to the store to complain. Whiton received a call later that day from the company’s home office in Maine, telling her it had received a complaint about her and reprimanded her.

“I said I would bow out gracefully and give my notice because I didn’t want to be a part of it. I’m 65 years old, you know?” Whiton said.

I was saddened to read that a crematorium in one of my mission cities (and Arnold Schwarzegger's home town!) burned to the ground when large amounts of burning fat from a deceased woman's 440 lb. body clogged the venting system. Apparently there has been a rash of similar fires throughout Central Europe, and new crematoria are being constructed to handle the anticipated increase of obese corpses.

In a somewhat related, if more personal, story. I home teach an NICU nurse who two weeks ago sustained a badly strained elbow when she, singlehandedly, had to hold back a new mother's belly flab (the woman weighs well over 400 lbs.) with one arm while cleaning the incision from a C-section the day before. The patient's husband was estimated to weigh approximately 110 pounds.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Mrs. Sparky was chatting with the checker about the holiday rush at Albertson's yesterday. She learned that food stampers like to celebrate their freedom with crab legs, lobster tails, ribeye and such. Something to think about while you're enjoying your hot dog.

Yes, all food stampers are irresponsible and ridiculous.
