Isn't a rupture in the fabric of the time-space continuum now imminent? Or do we need SU to agree with us also?

It is all about timing. Something I have yet to learn as well

            YOhio addressed this issue yesterday.

            • Susan Estrich, criminal law professor at USC's Law School (amongst other things) wrote her take on it and its linked to realclearpolitics.com. Given the fact that she's devoted much of her career towards the examination of rape law in the US, it doesn't appear that she's very sympathetic towards Roman Polanski.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

With all due respect to her, she really says nothing that we haven't already discussed in this thread. It is curious when alleged experts that have dedicated their entire lives to this issue are not really offering up anything new or insightful than your average message board poster.

                        • I haven't really followed the mass-media blather in regards to this case, though I have enjoyed DDD's and falafel's ping pong match on here. I'm curious if most of the support that Mr. Polanski has been receiving from Hollywood and Europe has been primarily from males? Are famous or more importantly intelligent women coming forth to defend and/or praise him as vociferously as Woody Allen and the Europeans have?

Actually, I agree with you. Nothing in her 1000 world column hasn't been covered in the nearly 300 posts that have been put in this thread.

She herself was raped in 1974 and I imagine that's what led her to devote a significant amount of her career towards reforming rape law. And I'm probably not the biggest proponent of all the changes she's tried to bring about. Estrich therefore has both an emotional and professional attachment to the issue and there aren't that many people that are better positioned to talk about it. I just thought it would be interesting to read her comments on it.

Interesting response. So does this mean you agree? I suspect not, but it makes the point that sometimes it is not difficult. Sometimes the right thing to do is easy. It doesn't require pages of analysis or thinking or speculating. It requires some simple factual predicates (admitted rapist, guilty plea, flees the system, lives as a fugitive) and it requires simple thinking and notions of right and wrong. I agree with you here; she said nothing new. Neither did you. But the fact remains that he is a criminal at least twice over. While I am not dwelling on the crime nor his life nor his punishment, we are discussing it in this thread, and it seems clear beyond cavil that he should be required to return and face the judge.

(One of the things that you seem to have overlooked in your very lengthy posts is that he may return and be discharged from custody. It may be that the prior judge engaged in misconduct. It may be that the new judge will decide the original plea for time served will be followed. No one knows yet. The point is that he should be compelled to return. The system should complete its task and he should be forced to appear. IF he is incarcerated for a long time it will not bother me for a moment. But I am happy to live with the result meted out by the properly assigned judge. Otherwise, there is no justice at all, ther is only a rich admitted crimianl that manipulated the system to his benefit. Our rule of law is more important than that.)
                              PLesa excuse the tpyos.

One woman named Samantha Geimer comes to mind. She argues that the charges against Polanski should be dropped. Not sure if she is intelligent enough for you. Her opinion carries little weight on the issue of Polanski's fate, at least on this forum. Here, the majority seem very compelled by the integrity of the rule of law. The same people that break little laws all the time, likely...speeding, downloading music, etc...the rule of law is supreme...only as it applies to everyone else.
