  • Roman Polanski Arrested

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/27/...ted/index.html

I read the police reports on thesmokinggun.com and it sickened me:
    http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/polanskia1.html
    http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/polanskib1.html

The girl was 13 and he gave her a partial quaalude and alcohol and then performed "cuddliness" on her, as she put it. He then had vaginal intercourse with her, and climaxed in her anus because she wasn't on the pill. She was 13, the deposition is detailed, and she claims she told him to stop repeatedly, and that she didn't resist because she was scared of him.

    His cowardice has few equals.

    What an awful story.

I know they update these stories often, but get some proofreaders, CNN.com. This section:
There have been repeated attempts to settle the case over the years, but the sticking point has always been Polanski's refusal to return to attend hearings. Prosecutors have consistently argued that it would be a miscarriage of justice to allow a man to go free who "drugged and raped a 13-year-old child."
    appears twice in the article.
"More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

I think Roman Polanski is an interesting figure. Involved in so many fascinating events. What he did was wrong, of course, although the girl in question doesn't event think he should be sent to jail anymore. Roman's wife was Sharon Tate, the woman that was murdered by the Manson family (Susan Atkins just died this week). Roman was involved with this underage girl at Jack Nicholson's house. He won an academy award. He has lived as a fugitive. Not sure how this phase of his life will end, but it certainly has been compelling.

I thought everybody knew about Roman Polanski. I guess not.

I knew about Roman Polanski and I think it would be a travesty of justice if he doesn't serve jail time. Regardless of what the victim desires now, what he did was horrid and very much against the law. I am glad the victim seems to have healed, but Polanski should not escape justice when he pled guilty 30 years ago and yet has avoided the consequences for his atrocity for as long.

I agree. If he gets anything less than he would have 30 years ago then the system has incentivized what he did. If anything, the court should go out of its way to give him more.

I agree. I think they should add two days for every one he's been on the lam.

Oh, I knew all about this. I've gone round and round with colleagues who've made excuses for him because of Chinatown. He's led an interesting life, for sure, and I'm guessing that if the Swiss acquiesce to extradition, he'll see the end of his in a correctional facility. From what I understand, the victim doesn't want him to go to jail anymore because she's tired of her name being dredged up every time the media gets ahold of this story.

I think he should spend the rest of his life in jail as I am sure there isn't much left of it.

Why is France so supportive of him? Is it the French admiration of the aritist? Thumbing their noses at the USA? Is this type of crime not as serious in France?

I think it has to do with France having a long standing position of not Extraditing people to the US due to the death penalty.

I have heard it reported there is also support for him in the "entertainment" industry. I can't name name's, so if asked for a link, I can't provide one.

It wouldn't surprise me if true though, that group as a whole isn't exactly bulwarks of traditional values.

I believe that they will only refuse to extradite on a death penalty-eligible case. I could be wrong on that.

It's because he is a french citizen.

I don't care to google the actual event at all because it's so horrid, but what are we to make of the fact that Anjelica Huston was there the entire time?
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.
