If you're doing fine on it, don't worry--there are plenty of people who run 5 days a week. I would make a few of those "recovery runs" (slower pace) but you're probably fine. If you're hurting, then consider rest days--that's all I'm saying. Personally, I run into problems if I run that much, so I bike or swim if i do anything on my off days.Originally posted by UtahDan View PostWell, 4.5 on Sat will be my long run so I'm starting to get to where I feel like I am actually doing something but it has taken a while. In another month my long run will be 6.0. I am running five days a week (sounds like people think that may be too much) but one of those days is a very short run.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Finally pulled out my mountain bike and did 8.8 miles. 919 calories, which I think is an underestimate as Garmin bases this off of heart rate only. 919 calories is what I burn in 7 miles of running. And I get 2.9 miles credit. This mtn biking ratio is bogus. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

It is not based on heart rate only. In fact, I don't think it uses the heart rate monitor at all. I rarely wear my monitor and it still gives me a calorie reading.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostFinally pulled out my mountain bike and did 8.8 miles. 919 calories, which I think is an underestimate as Garmin bases this off of heart rate only. 919 calories is what I burn in 7 miles of running. It is a combination of distance, speed, and elevation change. For example, when I ride up the canyon and back, about 2/3 of the calorie total is burned on the way up."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I do think that the garmin tends to overestimate on calories when it comes to biking. That is just with my small experience with it. Prepare to burn about 5000 calories on Saturday based on the way it does it.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostIt is not based on heart rate only. Yes, I am pretty sure it does also. I am guessing that the formula is calibrated to mountain biking, not road biking.Originally posted by BigPiney View PostI do think that the garmin tends to overestimate on calories when it comes to biking. Nevertheless, I find it motivating. Even though the numbers are inflated, I get a warm fuzzy feeling when it tells me that I burned 2000 calories last night on my ride."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Thats means I get to eat 6,000 tomorrow night at Rosies. Thats great news. I was having a hard time deciding between the Yankee Pot Roast and the Southern Fried Chicken. I'll just get one of each. That Peanut Butter Butterfinger ice cream pie with Oreo cookie crust is sounding pretty good as well.Originally posted by BigPiney View PostI do think that the garmin tends to overestimate on calories when it comes to biking. It's amazing how close this mileage race is. 947 to 929 at the moment.

Ok...that makes sense. I've also noticed that it overestimates elevation changes because the smoothing function sucks.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostIt is not based on heart rate only. Still, I felt a lot more gassed after that ride than I would after a 2.9 mile run. Grrr...At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Toally agree. We'd still be talking about how fun it might be if it weren't for her.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostIt's amazing how close this mileage race is. 947 to 929 at the moment.

But you are on the running team. You should be happy with the ratio given that your group is more likely to generate running miles.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostOk...that makes sense. I've also noticed that it overestimates elevation changes because the smoothing function sucks.

I know. But I also haven't pulled out my bike until now because I knew it was a crappy ratio.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostBut you are on the running team. You should be happy with the ratio given that your group is more likely to generate running miles.

guys, I am still a bit in the dark on something....is this competition including miles on a machine? It seems that some have referenced machine miles, while others had voiced a preference that we wait until the next time to include machine miles.
I keep track of all my miles via fitday and could easily backfill for the month of July (not that it would be a great amount), but all my miles are on a machine.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.
