It's funny how keto has skewed my thinking. I read the label on the Built Bars and start thinking about just how bad they are with their five net carbs. My current mindset reads that label and thinks that if I eat one of those I'll gain five pounds instantly.

Are these good for you? They're made with real coco - and only have 10 carbs.

I've been coming across anti intermittent fasting stuff lately. Not sure what's driving it. Here's an article written by a nutritionist in the Seattle Times.
https://www.seattletimes.com/life/we...-so-good-news/
A few studies, including one I will talk about shortly, did look promising, but they had concerning flaws. I also stumbled upon some intermittent fasting studies from the 1960s and 1970s, confirming that there really is nothing new under the sun when it comes to dieting — and if any of these diets worked they wouldn’t intermittently fall out of favor. I will give these early studies credit for the truthful audacity of some of their language. One 1970 study even used the term “intermittent starvation.” Indeed.Overall, this latest round of studies continues to find that intermittent fasting isn’t any better than good old-fashioned calorie restriction for weight loss and improving health markers such as blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Considering that caloric restriction hasn’t proven to be good for those things either — except maybe in the short term — that’s not a ringing endorsement for intermittent fasting. Her point seems to be that we need to be taking in protein throughout the day to help build muscle instead of losing muscle mass during IF.Any type of weight loss from calorie restriction includes muscle loss (yes, even if you’re also exercising), but intermittent fasting also reduces opportunities to eat a protein-rich, muscle-supporting meal. Maintaining muscle is important for healthy aging, and not just because muscle loss increases the risk of falling, which can lead to fractures. Just some food for thought.

I am totally off the IF fad now. So many studies concluding that it doesn't have much benefit.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View PostI've been coming across anti intermittent fasting stuff lately. Not sure what's driving it. Here's an article written by a nutritionist in the Seattle Times.

I fast 24 hours twice a week. Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm not sure I see the benefits that IF people rave about, but it has been helpful in 2 ways. First, it is an easy way for me to restrict calories. I have an issue with self control at times. I'll try to eat a reasonable lunch but then it just gets away from me. I also enjoy eating during the weekend and this allows me to be a little more lax and enjoy myself. Secondly, it's an easy way for me to skip out on extravagant lunches that my coworkers often do. They know I'm fasting and don't ask.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

So IF has allowed me to stick to an easy schedule, and thus far, allowed me to enjoy food while maintaining a healthy weight.

It's worked for me, but I bought some Greek yogurt to get protein for breakfast, and I like a peanut butter sandwich for lunch. Plate discipline is still key, along with healthy exercise. One big change I've made recently is I'm drinking more water and less soda. Coke Zero has been my drink of choice--no calories! But some days that was all I was ever drinking. I hate the taste of water unless I'm really thirsty. To get around that, I've been falling back on the water spiked with apples and cinnamon. I expect that change in and of itself will have the most impact on my well being.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

I have been losing weight recently. My secret method is ..... (wait for it) ..... eating smaller portions, cutting back on sugar, snacking less, and eating more veg & protein. This isn't rocket science.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View Post

Yes. I'd say that all rolls up nicely under the heading of plate discipline--partly caloric restriction, partly just making healthier choices. I try to stay away from fried foods.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

This is kind of funny, coming from you in part, because weren't you one of the earliest proponents of IF on this board? I recall you mentioning the book, and some of your son's opinions (favorable, IIRC).Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

But in the end, I agree - weight loss is pretty simple. Just requires discipline and consistency.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.
