The father of one of my good friends was BYU's tennis coach in the 80s. He's in his 70s now, and he played with us yesterday. Dude obliterated us. But it was still fun.

I stopped playing, I hit 5.0 after 3-4 months and stopped playing consistently not long after that. I’m too old to play with the younger dudes and too young to play with the older guys.

I went and played a couple months ago with our local 5.0 group and was easily the worst one.

What does it mean to hit 5.0? Is that a player rating? What's the scale?

When I first started playing 5.0 was the highest level of play.

I think they go up to 6.0 now.

The game has changed a lot over the past 2 years with players getting way better even maturing enough to having a professional circuit.

The scale goes from 2.5-6.0. Most people with some level of hand eye coordination should be able to play 3.5 within 2-3 months. Those with a serious racket background should be able to progress to 4.5 within a month of play.

Lots of professional players were 5.0 players after playing for 10 mins.

Utah/Idaho has lots of really good play.

                  Most people’s cap is 4.0.

I don't know how to play it and I've never even seen a game played. Am I an outlier?

I'd say you are solidly in the majority, along with about 325 million other Americans.

Careful. In pickleball, outlier is a term used to describe someone who uses sugar in their brisket rub.

Just like Mama Diddley always told me. You're just not special, Bo. You're pretty average.

Nope. I will warn you that watching it is helpful to learning to play it, but it’s far more enjoyable to play than watch.
