Up at 5:30 this morning, heading out in a few to play Gladstan. Never played it before. It was the only course with an open tee time for today (Memorial Day) when we lazy butts finally got around to trying to find a tee time.

I should still be asleep. Though I do enjoy early morning golf once we tee off. Gladstan better be worth it.

I really like Gladstan, the new holes on the back are very brutal though. How did you like it?

I actually went up to Tooele today and played Overlake, its a links style course, not real difficult but a fun course nonetheless.

I played Fri. Sat. and Mon. I got killed. Shot 82, 81 and 83 and got killed. My partner we always take the field against showed up and had only played once this year.

I am not saying we were gambling. What I am saying is the entrance fee into the tournament each day was around $250.

And to think, I couldn't have been happier with my 82 on Saturday (Green Springs). Perhaps my Par Birdie Birdie finish has something to do with it. When you end the round well, it always seems like a better round than it was.

True. I have only one round in the 70s in my life, but I still agonize about the back-to-back doubles to end the round.

I have never shot in the 70s. I probably play more golf then anyone on here except BYU71 and everytime I go out, I get progressively worse.

It was a complete fluke. It was in the 40s and blowing 20MPH that day too. It wasn't the toughest course in the world, but it wasn't a pushover either.

It wasn't actually the scores that has me bugged.

I don't want to brag, well I guess I do. I once had a 69. It was about 3 years ago. It was at Oakridge, which is a legitimate par 72 course.

You should brag about that. That is unreal.

I shot -1 on the back 9 at Sleepy Ridge in Orem last year. (rolled in 2 birdie putts from 30+ feet and chipped in for birdie on another hole) That was by far as good as I have ever played, I dont remember my score on the front but it wasnt good.

Because of the crowds we went out late and did nine holes but I finally hit the ball pretty good and had a 38. I've been stuck in the low to mid 40's so this felt good.

I really like Gladstan, the new holes on the back are very brutal though. How did you like it?

Wow. I was blown away, in part because I went in with low expectations. I mean come on, the course is in Payson, how good can it really be, right? The greens were in better shape than any I've played on in quite a while, the course is scenic, nice variety from front to back, views of Utah County/Utah Lake, some tough holes, some ego-friendly holes, nice sand traps, some water...a bit of everything.

I'm now looking forward to going back and wish I had played it sooner.

As for the round itself, it was spectacularly horrible actually. one of those that ended up with me coming home and just about listing my entire bag on ebay. A chip-in on the 18th saved that from happening. Cruel, cruel game.

But yeah, a great course. The back does indeed get a little tricky, but it's not insane. Very much enjoyed Gladstan and looking forward to going back and playing it better.

I just got a serious case of the shanks, I am talking TinCup type shanks.

I was even through 5 holes at Fox Hollow today, and then over the next 10 I was all over the course, it was as bad as I remember playing in a long time. Honestly I looked like I had never swung a club. I managed to finish bogey, par, bogey. Which considering those middle holes was a huge accomplishment. I think I am going to hit the range before I play again.

I hesitate to bring this up, as a shank is really The Shot That Dares Not Speak Its Name. But I don't even understand what a shank is. I used to think it was simply making contact with the hosel or shaft of the clubhead. But when I've had the shanks [rarely, praises be unto the golf gods], I know it's not that; rather, it's as if the clubhead had simply twisted around about 60 degrees and the ball flies off at 2-3 o'clock, rather than heading out at high noon. But that's not it either, as holding the club in a death grip doesn't change things either. I'd like to see ultra slo-mo footage of what goes wrong with a shank. Or maybe I wouldn't, as simply talking about such things can bring on a case of the you-know-whats, and I regret even writing about it now.
