  • I had my check up today. The boot came off but my doctor wants me to go without running for three more weeks. She said I need to be 6 weeks off and pain free before starting to run. I told he I've been pain free since March 1, but I guess she uses some other timeline, which is pain free to the touch. Last appointment I was still a bit tender on teh bone if she pushed really hard.

Three more weeks on the bike

Oh, and once I start running again, I have to start out at 1/2 mile per night and build up again adding only 1/2 mile every 10-14 days. I'll do exactly what she says to make sure I don't get reinjured but it sure is tough.

    • My 305 bit the dust today. Any thoughts on a replacement? I have been eyeing the new 610 but don't know a ton about it. I will probably get a dedicated edge 305 for the bike, so ignore that for the time being. Thoughts?

My sympathies, that must really blow chunks. Seriously. Your doc's plan for getting you back in seems on the conservative side, to say the least...any chance of getting a second opinion? Does she work regularly with runners?

Either way, I'll send some patience mojo and good spirits mojo your way.

What kind of injury did you have? I'm not sure I completely agree with the "pain free" thing. Activity to tolerance is usually the name of the game. You usually heal better with fewer sequelae when you continue doing tolerable activities while you heal.

I got lucky today. I've been wanting to try out the new and highly reviewed Garmin 610 - came out last month during Boston. Nobody has one. 3-5 week wait online - significantly backordered. I wasn't even thinking about getting it...

...until I called up my running store to see which models they had in. Turns out they got a shipment of 610s today, so I went down and got one. The store employees were envious and want to know how it works.

Full report to come later after I take it on a run tonight.

She does deal with athletes, although she's a bit young. I'm fine with playing the conservative side as I need it to heal completely. I've already written off a fall marathon and am looking to a winter half-marathon and a spring marathon.

I have a stress fracture in my lower left tibia. I stopped running on March 1 and have only done eliptical/biking since. I only got pain after running as I stopped pretty early on instead of trying to power through the pain. I think that was a good move on my part.

I've had a stress fracture before so she's being extra cautious. The walking boot sucked, but it's off now and I'm almost ready to start running again. Unfortunately I'll be out of the country when she said I could start so I'm delayed another week, but oh well. I just want to be healed and running and that will happen soon enough. I'm also just tired of the stationary bike. Those things suck even when you are watching Arrested Development.

              • Quick review on the Forerunner 610, and other things.

First thing on the 610 - all the bulkyness of the 305 is gone. This looks like a pretty normal watch, if slightly heavier. And it can be worn as a watch, too - after so long of inactivity, the exercise functions shut down and is just a low-end digital watch type of thing. And then with the press of a button and a swipe of the touch screen, you're back in exercise mode.

The touch screen is pretty amazing. They've made it so that it takes a little bit of extra pressure to actually make it work, which is fine by me - no accidental activation. And the main functions - stop, start, lap, reset - are on buttons on the side anyway.

Readout is clear and screens completely customizable. And it's much easier to customize than the 305 simply because of the touch screen. You can have up to four fields on a bunch of screens - not sure how many, actually, because I only really use a couple - and they are easy to chance. My main screen has three fields, and the center one is a bit larger than the others (this is where I put my realtime pace).

Has the same cycling functionality as the 305. I had to get a new $14 mount (on its way) but it synced right up with my cadence sensor. Switching sports is as easy as holding down the lap button.

Despite the smaller screen, it's just as easy to read for me as the 305 (although if I had a worse prescription I might not agree - I can still technically drive a vehicle without corrective lenses). And the sync functionality of the +ANT sensor is a massive improvement - plug a stick into your USB port, and do a one-time download and sync. After that, all you need to do is be close to the computer and it automatically sends everything to Garmin Connect. Works with Daily Mile still; haven't tried other apps.

I never had any complaints about the HR monitor that came with the 305, but the new one is much better. Not a super selling point one way or the other.

This also will (apparently) sync up with +ANT devices at the gym/home scales, etc. I haven't tried that functionality yet.

The one complaint would be the calorie algorithm. The 610 has a proprietary algorithm that is supposed to be accurate within 10% (greater than just about any other practical method) based on HR measurements in real time. However, based on the readings from my first few exercises (1) either I have trained myself to use no energy at all or (2) the algorithm is off. It was reading half of what was being calculated before. Once I got digging around, I found that the algorithm self-adjusts over a period of time and I'm seeing a change over a few days, so maybe it's just the adjustment period. Jury is still out. (To see what I mean compare the calorie per mile burn on this 305 measured run with my first 610 run and my run from Tuesday.)

Overall I'm not sure it's worth the money over the 305 yet, as the 305 is a fine piece of machinery. I have to play around with some of the extra functionality to be honest. I am getting the feeling - based on what is being stocked around here - that the 305 is on its way out, though, and this has none of the bezel issues that the 405/410 has.

The "other" bit is that I'm running again. Ankle/calf/ligaments are still sore sometimes but much improved over three weeks ago. I'm going to try for another 20 this weekend but pull it back if I feel anything not nice and then taper into the actual race.

                • As I've said before, I don't mind running/walking in weather. That said, I hate exercising in hail - it stings. About 4 miles into my walk/jog yesterday, it started hailing - I ended up waiting it out in the vestibule of a credit union for about 20 minutes.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

                  • memorial 5k/10k today in Orem, I ran the 5k. I was encouraged that despite not feeling it all week and knowing it wouldn't be my best 5k time ever, I still turned in a time that was good enough for 13th overall. And, once again, my 35-39 age group killed it. I think 5 finished ahead of me. Hooray for middle-aged runners!

Highlight of the race was feeling the wind from the 10k winners who passed me a quarter mile from the finish. I honestly feel no shame in that (they started 10 minutes earlier). Those dudes were flyin', 5:00 flat pace won the 10k. Crazy.

22:32. Not stellar, especially if a recent BQer is asking (awesome job, btw).
But I'm plenty content even if it wasn't my best race day ever.

                          That's fast. Well done.

                          • Here's a question for the CUF running collective.

For runs where lubrication is necessary, I have a little jar of Vaseline that cost less than a dollar and lasts for a year or two. It works great, but my clothes stain over time (read: I get two petroleum stains in the nipple area of my shirts).

As I was gearing up for the mud run at Camp Pendleton this weekend, I saw some people pulling out their Body Glide. I never purchased any because the Vaseline is cheaper and works fine, but now I wonder whether the Body Glide is easier on clothing. Also, I saw people applying Body Glide only in the leg areas and not up top.

Is Body Glide as effective as Vaseline in the lubrication department? Does it stain clothes? Can it be used in all areas?

Don't know about the staining, but I use it on my arms, lats, and haven't noticed any. It is great for keeping things non chafing. I recommend it.

I use vaseline on my crotch and behind my pits (for the same reason as you, it's cheap). For the nips, I buy these by the case:
