  • For the first time in 3 months I ran this morning. I actually walked .25 miles, ran .5 miles and then walked .25 miles. No pain, no soreness, and no pressure in my left leg

Now it's time to start off slow again and slowly build back up. My doc said to start at 1.5 miles per week and add .5 mile every 10-14 days. Here's to hoping I'm fully healed. If anything I've learned quite a bit about myself and my body during these last 3 months.

        • in Anaheim this week. Just ran a test/easy run since taking all of the last week off due to pain in my left leg.

Felt nothing, which is great. I think all I learned in this week off is that I can't seem to get my heart rate up riding my crappy walmart mountain bike (unless I find a hill and just ride up and down over and over). Bikes just don't do it for me. I have missed hitting the pavement.

So tonight, I hit the pavement. Err, sidewalks. And I learned a couple things, aside from a hopeful optimism that I'm not injured the way I thought I might be. One, watching very-nearby fireworks while running makes you feel good. Two, the only place to run around the hotels near disneyland is on sidewalks, which wouldn't be awful except for...three, doesn't matter if a sidewalk is wide enough for 12 people, if there is a group of 12 people they'll walk side by side in a single wall.

I did another 1/2 mile on Wednesday (leg felt good) and I'm looking to do 1/2 mile tomorrow. I had my last doctor's appointment this morning and she said I should be good to run. I'll start off at 1.5 miles per week and only running 3 times per week. Then I'll add 0.5 miles per week while building back up.

            It's good to be back.

That's great to hear, Moliere. Welcome back!

              • I ran a 5k this morning. I wasn't sure how I'd do since I'd been taking a lot of days off lately with a sore knee, but it turned out pretty good. I won the race. My time was 22:03, but the course was about a quarter mile long, so I would have been around 20:30 on a true 5k course.
Now I have to disclose that most of the fast runners entered the 10k and the second place finisher was a 14 year old girl. But I still won it, baby!

                  Awesome! Some important follow-up questions:
--did you win any cool prizes or cash money?
--did they have tape stretched across the finish line for you to break?
--when you turned around after the finish to get in the face of that 14 year old did you celebrate Dwyane and LeBron style or did you just say neener neener?

                  Congrats man, that's pretty cool.

                  • I'm not sure if this is a compliment to me or a slam on Utah teenagers, but ...

One of my former bishops is the principal of one of the local high schools. One of my usual routes goes by his house. Monday as I walked passed his home on the tail end of my walk/run, we got to talking and among other things he said was that I walk faster than some of the kids is his school run

I may be small, but I'm slow.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

Teenagers are lazy and for the most part fat, at least around these parts. My kids school had a walk a thon last year, my daughter had the most laps around the track in 30 minutes than anyone in the rest of the school. She is in 3rd grade and this is a K-12 school.

                      • Two full weeks into my running and still no issues with the left tibia. I got some new shoes today so now I have two pair of nice/soft shoes. I'm going to follow the docs advice and add 1/2 mile each week (so far I'm at 2 miles).

I think I'm now going to target the 2012 SLC marathon and possibly do a half marathon in January (to get some long distance racing experience) if I can find one in the area.

                        • I love my Saucony Kinvara 2s. They're very comfy and I feel really fast in them. I'm still alternating them with my regular shoes to reduce risk of injury.

Speaking of, I got paranoid about stress fractures, after reading this thread and then yesterday I had a dull pain about 1/3 of the way up my tibia during my run. I didn't run today because of it. So help me I'll be mad.

No worries, it seems that a lot on here have had that fear after reading about my injury. I think I'm just prone to stress fractures but I'm taking a lot of steps to avoid them.

I'm now running with pairs of Saucony Progrid Ride 3 and Asics Culumus 13. My Asics look cool....

It'd be really out of the ordinary to get a stress fracture without any previous pain. What you're describing is very likely just the onset of shin splints. I have no idea what your running schedule is like, but most often shin splints are a result of increased mileage or speed work. Reduction of these activities is the cure. People who get stress fractures tend to have been running with shin splint pain for some time.
