Hostile, do you take your kids or do you go solo?
For the overwhelming majority of the time skiing is a family activity for us. We try and take all four kids as often as possible. My 2 oldest (11,9) can pretty much ski the entire mountain and can hang with my wife and me. With the younger 2 (7,5) we will sometimes put them in lessons or split up parents between the two groups; sometimes all 6 of us ski together.

This weekend, however, we have free lodging at the Cliff lodge as a benefit of buying our ski passes before memorial day and we are leaving the kids at home

    • Thanks to RC Vikings I got all sorts of inside info for my hymen breaking experience of skiing in the Grand Tetons! My clan is heading to Targhee next Saturday for a day of fun of riding the Dreamcatcher to the top of Fred's mountain. Their ski school for the youngsters sounds like a blast. Interested to see how much my 4 yr old can pick up in one day of it.

Should be the best champaign powder you've ever ridden. If my fb feed is correct as of right this second, sounds like there's gonna be plenty of it!

BTW- when is the extension on Sacajewea supposed to be done- those that know?

Just pay for the SnowCat day already?

Per RC's inside info I plan to avoid Sacajewea. Skiing with two 8 year olds and a 10 year old on a snowboard it sounds like getting back from Peaked Mountain area to Fred's is a "pain in the ass." Pains in the ass on a ski slope are immeasurably magnified when one is supervising those below the age of 10. I will ask for the information you request but I don't plan to head in that direction, unless it brings me across Mary's Nipple....oooooooaaaaahhhh.

          • Ha yes. By all means do not take your kids to Sacajawea unless you would like the experience of unstrapping and hiking back to base with 3 children in tow. As it is, it's all I can do to get back myself on the cat track without unstrapping.

I haven't ridden there since my college days, so if I make it up that way, maybe I will have to do the SnowCat day now that I have a job. *checks prices* Still pretty 'spensive, but it would be cool to do the lodging and all that to make it worth it.

              • Not much is open down low - Peruvian, Wilbere, mid-gad all closed. Tram and Little Cloud open but only skiable down Chips and Regulator. Not bad for this early in the season. Pretty good size crowd. High clouds but no snow at this time.

                • I'm hoping to ski a lot more this winter than the last several--I've lived in the Boise area for the last four years, but during that time I've only skied at BC/Whistler, Targhee, Teton Village, and various Utah resorts. I'm hoping to get acquainted with Bogus Basin and possibly Brundage.

Unrelated, but my sister posted this awesome and BA image of my dad on her facebook page. I guess it was scanned from an old slide that had been sitting in my grandparents' basement for who-knows-how long.

Brundage isn't bad. Far better than Bogus. I crashed a party at Tamarack after some snowboard slopestyle competition but I never got a chance to board there. But if I lived in the area I'd definitely have a pass to Brundage. One of my college roommates has a cabin on the lake up in McCall and we'd hit it up. The one thing though is that the snow seems heavy there and it sticks to trees like I have never seen elsewhere.

$105 for a ticket to The Canyons, Vail and a few others. I'm not sure how a family can afford to ski anymore.

                        • Awesome pic LS!

12" overnight. No Thanksgiving weekend opening for us, but should be ready to roll by December.

                              • Targhee was a bit rough on Saturday. The base was only about 24". They groomed some trails for their opening day, which was friday, but due to the low base they did not groom for saturday. I prefer groomed trails. I went to the top of Fred's MTN with my twin 8 year olds and we made it down but it was rough. After that I spent the day in the Shoshone lift area and even that was still a bit rough. It started snowing in the afternoon and my wife commented that the runs got smoother with the fresh powder piling up, as I was staying in the magic carpet area with my 4 year old the last couple of hours. Their website claims they got 17" in the recent storm and the base is now over 40" and they are grooming a great deal many runs. With global warming Targhee might become the preferred ski destination of the intermountain west!

Besides that on the drive home I took RC Vikings' recommendation to time my visit to Archer, ID's world famous "Big Juds" when a certain waitress was there at about 5:00 mountain time. On the drive home even my non ears pierced rural Idaho mormon girl wife asked if I enjoyed dinner at "Big Jugs?" This is a fabulous country we have! Bown, bicha bown bown!
