Just wanted to give '71 another reason to complain about the Honor Code

I hate the chewing gum analogy which I heard in the 70s by my bishop and priest leaders. I also didn't know how one could rob somebody of virtue. Virtue is a personal attribute.

I still remember this old guy telling us priests, nobody wants a woman who was not a virgin because she was like ABC gum. He was also the guy who said that polygamy would be re-instated, and we guys would get one "honey, a couple of ordinaries and one damn ugly wife."

The church teaches the perfect atonement, which means we are forgiven and not even god remembers our sins anymore. That alone flies in the face of the chewing gum analogy.

Of course, maybe that isn't direct enough.

I don't think it is when you see the teachings of folks like SWK. I seem to remember him saying something along the lines of "If LDS girls think they can go off and break the law of chastity and then repent and that everything will be fine they have another thing coming. There are plenty of degrees of glory and they shouldn't think they'll attain to the very top if they behave that way."

I remember reading that (or something akin to that) while on my mission. One week later my sister wrote me and told me she was pregnant with a non-member's baby. I slipped out of the chair I was sitting on into a heap on the floor and sobbed like a baby for half an hour before I could get control of myself.

Leaders SHOULD be careful with such a membership with how they phrase things. And if they put stuff like that out there and they learn that members are, perhaps, taking their words to their logical conclusions and it's causing problems, they'd be better off addressing those things explicitly than say...getting everyone to vote no on legalizing marijuana. In my opinion.

I just searched LDS.org and found nothing relating chastity to chewing gum. So you want the Brethren to repudiate something they never said? I'm willing to bet that some YW leader came up with that analogy, just like the wilted rose and the licked cupcake.

What the activists want is the deletion of part of Moroni 9:9, already mentioned above.

Well they've changed plenty of other parts of the BOM so they shouldn't have a problem with that. And LDS.org hardly encapsulates the whole of Mormon teachings. Is Gospelink still around? Now THAT was the shit.

And whether the tippy top leaders have actually ever used the gum or cupcake analogy is irrelevant, I think most people in the church, if polled, would say they've heard those analogies used. Given what Elizabeth Smart told people, and given that the church has already removed Moroni 9:9 from the strength of youth manual dealing with that subject (at the request of some mormon feminists) I think it's pretty clear they're also aware of it. They could do something really small and simple to shut that shit down for good. And they should if they haven't already. And from the replies you active folks are giving me, it sounds like they haven't.

Looks like the ROTC program will be moving to UVU because there is a new Colonel assigned to BYU and he wants to be able to drink coffee at home. This it's pretty ridiculous, even for the honor coffee.

I like the change to provide amnesty. I don't agree with her desire to change the policy to total honor code immunity.

MacDonald and others continued to have reservations about the amnesty statement because it grants immunity only "at or near the time" of a reported sexual assault. In the course of Title IX investigations, then, students found to have violated the honor code at another time outside of the alleged assault will receive what the school calls "leniency," but not total immunity from the honor code.

This distinction fails to provide real protection to those reporting assault, MacDonald said. Students who drink, do drugs or have consensual sex won't always be assaulted the very first time they engage in those activities, she said.

MacDonald believes the limited amnesty policy will have a chilling effect. "Women aren't going to report," she said.
