I thought it was hilarious at the time. We all did!

Dallin is a lawyer and was a supreme court justice at that. Of COURSE he thinks that government should somehow be involved in making and enforcing laws related to this...along with everything else!

In another post you speculated that it might be "guilt" that fires my critique of Mormonism. My friend, you are a product of your generation. Fortunately, you see less and less among even LDS statements such as yours that anyone who has demonstrable, articulable, concrete and specific reasons for criticizing the LDS institution -- again, reasons not outside the mainstream of educated or informed Americans including millions of Mormons themselves --must be afflicted with a character defect.

i remember she once claimed that the USC campus was covered in graffiti that read "f*** the police."

Alabama Senate Passes Bill to Effectively Nullify All Sides on Marriage

This week, the Alabama state Senate passed a bill that would end the practice of licensing marriages in the state, effectively nullifying both major sides of the contentious national debate over government-sanctioned marriage.

Introduced by Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Bay Minette), Senate Bill 377 (SB377) would end state issued marriage licenses, while providing marriage contracts as an alternative. It passed through the Alabama state Senate by a 22-3 margin on May 19.

“When you invite the state into those matters of personal or religious import, it creates difficulties,” Sen. Albritton said about his bill in April. “Go back long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Early twentieth century, if you go back and look and try to find marriage licenses for your grandparents or great grandparents, you won’t find it. What you will find instead is where people have come in and recorded when a marriage has occurred.”

The bill would replace all references to marriages “licenses” in state law with “contracts.” The legislation would not invalidate any marriage licenses issued prior to the bill being passed.

A bit more than that... Parties wanting to get married or engage in some similar religious act would file a marriage contract that is signed by each of the parties and the two adult witnesses with the state probate office. The state would not issue marriage licenses. I imagine the marriage contract would be similar to some sort of prenuptial agreement.

This has been my position for some time. Get the state out of the marriage business!

Marriage has become nothing more than a legal contract. It is like being issued a drivers permit. With the piece of paper you have legal rights a single person may not have.

Exactly. It's nothing more than a legal contract that gives you additional rights and allows you to drive with a licensed passenger.

As to civil liberties issues, Catholics worldwide are rebelling even against this cool, loveable, and pragmatic pope. Whither the Mormons vis-à-vis their dogmatic gerontocracy?

Because same sex marriage has destroyed the institution? Is that your point?
