I haven't been paying any attention. I didn't realize this weekend was opening weekend. I have to think, however, that the folks running this for the church are almost as smart as some of the people on this board, and may have foreseen a lot of the things that are being discussed/criticized on CS.Originally posted by Applejack View PostWe are just at the starting line - opening weekend will tell us a lot about the general-populace's interest in a documentary about a small number of unrelated individuals that share a religion.Last edited by smokymountainrain; 10-10-2014, 08:01 AM.I'm like LeBron James.

The only review so far on this board is from Moliere's wife - and it was glowing. Don't listen to Scottie's web-based criticism - he's a non-mormon Ute.

To be fair, I think a lot of Mos will go see the movie. The young women in my ward are PUMPED about it. It's kind of cool for them that the relatively local theater will have a movie about mormons.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostStill blows my mind that someone thought this would work.
Of course, there are only three young women in my ward, so they probably aren't the financial tipping point on this whole endeavor.

I'll be at the 7:30 showing tonight in the theater that is most likely to have a high turnout in Houston. Prime date time and place. In other words, if my showing isn't sold out, none of them will be here.Originally posted by Applejack View PostTo be fair, I think a lot of Mos will go see the movie. How about implicit proselytizing?Originally posted by YOhio View PostAlmost nothing "works" when it comes to proselytizing. The church had nothing to lose.

The most compelling figure is Gail S. Halvorsen, a nonagenarian pilot who dropped candy during the Berlin airlift. As much as the film tries to draw a connection, what’s noteworthy about his story has little to do with religion.
One subject’s discussion of his efforts to “put the Lord first” exemplifies how the film preaches to the converted. The narration promises surprises (“This story may challenge what you think you know about the roles men and women play in Mormon homes”), but the movie might have started by examining its straw-man conception of the audience.
Meet the Mormons” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). Implicit proselytizing.
They should have taken out all that implicit proselytizing so it could have received a G rating. Is that Clean Flix company still around?"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

I am not sure if I agree. The Church did apparently produce this film and it seems they don't want to take a loss. If they didn't care if they took a loss on the film they could have distributed it on youtube, gave it to Netflix/Amazon to stream for free or, at least, showed it on BYUtv during prime info commercial hours (of around 3am in the morning). This is what the government pretty much does with the crap they produce on your dime... https://archive.org/details/FedFlixOriginally posted by byu71 View PostI know several people who work for the church. Very good people. I want to say that upfront so the following comment is a reflection on the system, not the people in it.
I think the church is like a government beaurocracy. There are no profit/loss considerations. There is plenty of money available. Someone comes up with a interesting idea and it gets reviewed by people who are "fully invested". Of course in their minds all the members would love to see this and there are many people who would like to find out why they are fully invested. No one says, this isn't reality."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

I would also assume they planned to break even or make money. What I was saying though was how they look at things may not be a real world analysis like a business has to do. Granted, businesses make bad decisions and lose money, but for the most part I think they look at the big picture and not from a narrow perspective.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostI am not sure if I agree. No celebs, unless you count someone that used to be in the stake YM presidency. Also, Ty Detmer has never lived in Houston as far as I know.
