  • Sooner hasn't changed. He's the same as he's always been.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

On a different note, I do get a chuckle about LDS scientists not being able to think critically. My father is a scientist and I had the benefit of being reared in a college town where much of the ward were also scientists who taught me in Sunday School, YMs, etc. But that was before correlation had taken hold, perhaps we enjoyed a little more freedom in the midwest than in the Mormon west. Anyway, it made for some interesting experiences but I've never thought these highly educated people, whom I have come to appreciate even more later in life, lacked the ability to think critically. I do think in this current era of correlation we see less evidence of this in formal church settings, but that doesn't mean that scientists or others have somehow not developed or lost the ability to think critically.
      1. I like the term "Pearl of Great Price" as a stand-in for the old, sarcastic/pejorative "chestnut."

      2. I can relate to your different note. I am currently in a pretty affluent ward dominated by M.D.s, JDs and PhDs. Sunday school is pretty fun because of the good historical, contextual, and critical doctrinal discussion, not because there are like minded people there to make me feel good about teachings I blindly accept.

I have to agree based on this new information. It also sheds light on his less-than-glowing reviews of his mission. That takes balls to just march off into the sunset to teach something for 2 years that you have never believed! I dare say his sacrifice for the Church was as great as any- I don't doubt he will receive his just blessings for that sacrifice.

It would be unfair and incorrect to argue LDS scientists don't think critically. How else could they succeed in their professions? Perhaps they do not examine theological claims in the same critical manner that they perform their profession, because that is not how they perceive it to be useful.

          • Sooner is a damning indictment of "inoculation". If you want your kids to grow up stalwart LDS treat them like mushrooms, send them to BYU, and hope to god they don't get for a professor that is formative some closet unbeliever (there are secret cells of them at BYU, I've observed) .

My company out-sources a lot of its business to India, and that country is much more religious than ours. I share your disappointment with the way gays are treated by religious people, but it's not because of a belief in God, it's because they use religion to justify their own bigotry that would likely exist whether they were religious or not. When the USSR outlawed religion, it didn't fix societal ills. People still found ways to hate each other. Yeah, it's sad that people die because they allow religious beliefs because they reject treatment, but that's rare. Hospitals are teeming with religious people allowing themselves to be treated.
This isn't the case in my circles. I don't know anyone outside of religious influence that is overtly homophobic enough to declare it publicly. There are some I'm sure, but I just don't see anti-gay opinion unless they believe God wants them to believe that way.

Sooner might be the greatest thread-starter in history. I appreciate his thoughts and willingness to carry the Foyer. This place would struggle without him.

For the record, I shrugged at Bednar's comments. I don't really expect him to say anything very different.
He's a business PhD. Those kinds of guys are wired to run the Church.

If it comes from any of the orthodox hardliners, I usually just tune out the message because you can't expect them to say much of value. I listen to those who resonate with me, Uchtdorf and a few others. Oaks is one who is becoming more difficult to listen to. I liked him very much when he was President of BYU.
