I am too, but my devotion is in spite of those elements, not because of them. Of course, you could replace the word “religion” with “nation”, and “tithes” with “taxes”, and you and I would be in the same boat. Yeah, I get that a religion that claims to have a direct line to the Almighty should be more attentive to such matters than a nation, but the Church, like our nation, is evolving. An African-American acquaintance (married to a former colleague), and former bishop, is able to look past the Church’s pre-1978 history and has found great community, spiritual support and an eternal perspective that he hadn’t had. The Church has made him a better person, as it has me. I concede it may not do that for everyone.

I am at an interesting place in life. While I may not be as smart as those three women in nikuman's stake, I doubt there are any significant doctrinal or historical issues that I haven't researched and processed. And the manner in which the church has reacted to the gay rights movement and the more recent OW fiasco have saddened me. Yet at the same time, my current church experience is more rewarding and enriching than it has been in many years. Go figure.

I don't consider myself enlightened. I am an active faithful believing member of the church with conservative leanings. But change happened from the inside because people were willing to express themselves in the context of the religious construct. And now that I've changed, I end up becoming a part of whatever the church becomes.

I've always thought you were a fantastic, reasonable, good person and this post is just one example.

It's hard to measure how much the Church helps or hinders any given individual. I have no doubt that it helps many and that I have benefited from many of my Mormon experiences.

I think the harm caused by Mormonism is underestimated when viewed from the inside, and the good of Mormonism is underestimated when viewed from the outside.

Come on, you enthusiastically belittle that which people revere and then wonder why those people are defensive? If someone tells me my wife is ugly and my kids are stupid, I'm going to push back a little, and it won't matter whether my wife is really ugly or my kids are really stupid. We love what we love for a variety of reasons, and sometimes those reasons aren't important.
