When bullies taunted me at school, my mom gave me some tools to deal with them. (She happens to be one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet. In fact, once her smart-alecky humor almost got us kicked off a tour bus in Hawaii! But that’s another story.)

    • It’s ironic (but not surprising) that as I’ve done research online for Good Pictures Bad Pictures, I’ve been exposed to more porn.

An update on the boy and the iPad his mom gave him...

A Pennsylvania high school student who recorded alleged bullying on an iPad was punished for his efforts—and now his parents are fighting back. The 15-year-old boy, who has learning disabilities, recorded his tormenters in class after enduring regular bullying, his mother tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. South Fayette High School reacted by slapping the teen with detention and dragging him before a judge for violating wiretap laws. "The whole thing has been a horrible nightmare," said the boy's mother, Shea Love. "This whole ordeal has made my son miserable."

        • But if kids are trained to say, “That’s pornography!” (and can practice saying it with their family)
How can you train the kids to say such a thing without having something available to identify?

            • Remember the 2009 study showing that Utah has the highest porn use rate in the nation? Turns out it was based on bogus data. In reality, Utah is among the lowest in the nation, and LDS in particular have a very low porn usage rate. Details here:

Sorry Uncle Ted. You are going to have to modify your shtick.

The data was adjusted to account for the average Utahn's definition of porn.

Bogus data? The 2009 study used credit card data to determine the location. This study used geotargeting based on the IP address?

Geotargeting Based on IP Address is Broken

When websites try to determine a user’s geographic location, this is usually done via the user’s IP address. In theory an IP address can be related to a physical location. This is how Google determines a user’s location in Analytics and Adwords – and even search – and Facebook in Insights.

It seems the accepted wisdom is that while IP address geolocation is not perfect, it’s mostly accurate. Estimates reach from 60% accuracy all the way up to 95% accurate. The problem is that the actual accuracy of IP geotargeting is nowhere near that.

                          http://www.stateofdigital.com/geotar...ess-is-broken/

I would guess that credit card data (i.e. the billing zip code) would give much more accurate location information.

From the article you referenced above...
Why do the results appear so different for these two sets of data? It’s almost impossible to know. The author of the 2009 study did not reveal the identity of the “top ten” porn vendor who gave him credit card data, and he admitted that there was no way to evaluate whether the users of that vendor were representative of the porn industry in general. His data, which was gathered from 2006 to 2008, also did not measure consumption, but rather paid subscriptions. A possible explanation of the discrepancy is that Utah’s porn use is skewed toward paid pornography.
So assuming the IP address based geotargeting is accurate enough to draw some conclusions it seems, based on the two studies, Utahns don't know that they can get their porn for free.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.
