What gets me is that I get a comment today that is some holy-rolling condemnation-spewing really-really-really-hyper-descriptive critique of "Spirit-feeling" priesthood holders and what they should and should not do in the bedroom with 'proxy objects.'

The word "abomination" was used and it wasn't tongue-in-cheek.
LDS sex toy parties???!! For crying out loud, wuap, this is the purnography thread. Stay on topic!

      • wow. there were some awesome turns of phrase in that post-- I must admit. " I don't want the taint of pornography on me"

oh and how about that response? Waxing a little too eloquently about pumping husbands to climax to not be TIC. funny stuff.

I went and looked at the IP address, it's from Intel Corporation in Oregon....and they came from a google search of "LDS sex toy parties."

I think it was totally for real. I get drive-bys like that on the blog all the time.

Exactly. Do you really think folks are going to discuss LDS sex toy parties?

Here is something that gets about as close to your sex toy idea as I'd bet people here are willing to get:

I had an Elders' Q. president whose wife told Faith that she had purchased The Joy of Sex. This is an example of a book that was clearly written as instruction, vs. pornography, which may be instructional, but serves a primary purpose of turning people on. The current edition of TJOS has photos of couples demonstrating sexual positions, and therefore might be considered 'pornographic' by the standards of some people here. Furthermore, the wife of EQP told Faith that it was her goal to attempt EVERY heterosexual couples' position in the book, in an attempt to keep things fresh and interesting. When asked about some of the 'rougher' techniques that such a thorough exploration of the text might involve, she responded (to the best of my recollection), "Bodies are pretty resilient to all of this stuff. People have been doing it for centuries. If we don't like something, we won't do it again, but how else would we know unless we tried?"

So, does The Joy of Sex contain pornography?

Does this good sister's attitude reflect the best of LDS pioneer spirit, the worst of LDS female dominion, or something else (you describe)?

Is it appropriate to expand one's bedroom play list with outside help?

But, I wasn't really trying to get conversation going about it....truly. I was just showing an attitude about sex that I know is common among many Mormons I know personally, and I linked it to my blog. I don't want a laundry-list of stuff, or anything of the sort, my post just talks about porn and sex toys and Amazon.com.......not their usage. The person's comment was hyper-descriptive and reads a like a check-off sheet of things done or left wanting. I have no problem with sex toys, as long as both parties are ok with it. I was just talking about how Amazon.com's selling of them, and the LDS sex toy parties that my wife's sibling attended, are removing sex toys from their association with the more prurient side of porn culture, and yet mainstreaming part of it at the same time.

As far as TJOS is concerned. I'd say that a copy purchased with the knowledge of both for their mutual benefit, without the intention of using it for the purpose of erotica, but rather as a how-to guide, would be ok. If the book's purchase or use is to prime the pump, that's probably not the best use.

I guess that's why your conclusion hurts, it really hurts.

                You haven't been paying attention.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

When I was 14 or so my friend found a TJOS book in his parents' stuff. I thought it was funny that the subjects of the drawings were a couple of hippies.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I've gotta give SG something else to riff about. And, we never really tackled the issues of lighting, soundtrack, and the expansion of "ADULT" bookstores into the suburbs.

                          • I have a legit question that just might give this thread some legs again. What is pornography? When does the depiction of human sexuality cross the line and become something that most of you consider to be verboten and harmful?

I ask in all sincerity. We have many fans of The Wire, True Blood, Entourage, Quentin T., etc. There are graphic depictions of human sexuality in a lot of media that many of us enjoy. What is it about actually 'seeing something go in' that makes it more inherently harmful than simulacra? And when does simulacra cause harm?

For the orthodox members, these questions aren't such a big deal, but what about everyone else? What about the True Blood fans?
