Actually Rosebud, what do you expect? When you sweep in here and clean up Babs' original summary, making it gender neutral and true (porn CAN harm people), then how do you expect people to respond? If you are too reasonable, what is there to discuss?

I had offered, as a nod to your contribution to the thread, the general question of whether or not porn as a social illness is more a product of our culture or something intrinsic to porn itself. Personally, I think porn as a problem is the result of culture, and only culture.

Acknowledged... forgive my hasty criticisms. There is value to the idea that porn is a systemic cultural problem rather than a linear problem that lends itself to obvious cause and effect correlations.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'systemic cultural problem.' I don't see it as systemic. It is certainly a problem for some religious folks. It is not a problem at all for many others.

But if you are saying that the problems of porn have to do with the strong personal opinions that people have come to develop about porn, then we are in agreement. Porn is a problem for people who think it is a problem. Was public sex a problem for the Inuit, the plains indians, or the Iroquois? The shame and taboo of seeing sex, along with the mental problems that often go hand in hand with shame and taboo, are byproducts of culture, and culture can change.

I am saying that porn is a "problem" because it hurts people. It hurts the models who are coerced into posing. It hurts the people who develop physiological addictions (via dopaminergic projections from the ventral tegmental area of the brain) that have devastating life-altering consequences. http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.com.../83/2/226.full. It hurts people who are judged harshly by unforgiving religious zealots http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=6146253. (I recognize that this is not true for every culture. You and I are likely in agreement that the folks in AF over-reacted to this situation. However, I still see these boys as victims of the availability of porn as well as their community.) It hurts victims of violent crimes inspired by porn (I am of course NOT stating that porn ALWAYS inspires violent crimes, but that it CAN inspire violent crimes). I believe this list could continue....

By "systemic" I mean that identifying direct linear cause and effect relationships between pornography and societal ills is reductionistic. I think we are in agreement about this. Arguments that blame societal ills on porn are narrow because who is it to say that societal ills don't cause porn. I'm guessing your disagreement with me, in this case, would probably only be my use of the word "ills."

By "cultural" I mean that porn is an undeniable part of our culture. This is also part of your argument.

Our disagreement most likely lies in whether or not pornography is a "problem." Again, I'm calling pornography a "problem" because it hurts people.
