    Gerrit Gong.

BYU has a ton of faculty with gay kids. Trans kids too.

Gong is my absolute favorite. He's the only Apostle I've ever seen that loves to have a wireless mic so he can wander around the chapel/gym as he gives a fireside.

You would have loved William R Bradford. Put that man in a gym with 100 missionaries and a chalk board and you know that over the next two hours 1. He will be all over the place (both physically and metaphorically), and 2. You will be seeing some weird stuff.

He spoke at our stake conference around 30 years ago and I really wish i could remember a few lines that had me looking around as if to ask others, "Are you hearting this?" There were several such moments, but the only one I still recall was, "There will never be a cure for AIDS, for God will not be mocked." Stupid and disgusting.

Yikes, he fortunately never told us that, but I still remember when he mapped out on the blackboard where the earth would physically would be moved to its new location.

That's much better and more entertaining. I much prefer a weirdo over a bigot.

Didn’t he say that prior to the signing of Dybantsa?

... that's a bit much, but I do think it the university president functions better when the person in the chair is not a general authority.

Maybe after Reese, BYU appoints Mark Harlan as the next pres? Wouldn't be so hard on poor Cecil and Merril then, would you?

Shit, your making me look up the answer my own question.

Gilbert was Commisar, er, Commissioner of CES in late 2024 when he said the quote below.
We can never become a place where the culture is pay to play. We would undermine everything at BYU if that wins out.

“All binding decisions go through (BYU) President Shane Reese to me and then to the full board,” Elder Gilbert said. “No one else can bind the university in any other way, not Tom Holmoe (athletic director), not the donors, and not our coach.”

in this article where that is quoted, they mention that Demin and Catchings were recent signees. So it was before Dybantsa.

However, he also said that while coaches salaries all come from internal budgets (but NOT tithing funds) and not donors, he doesn’t say that about funds.

“The church isn’t going to weigh in on dollar amounts or recruits, that’s the job of the university,” said Elder Gilbert. “But we will lay out some principles. We can never become a place where the culture is pay to play. We would undermine everything at BYU if that wins out. It’s tempting (but) if they don’t fit the mission, we’d unravel everything.”
