I'm looking to outsource some functions at work and didn't really know where to go, so I started googling. I eventually found my way to a start-up that isn't quite going yet, but that looked interesting. I filled out a form on their website and got an email back from the founder. She sent me a link to a page with some info and we scheduled some time to talk. I was looking through the links she sent, and one of them was form a Forbes(?) article about her. She has started a couple of businesses and sold them, and it gave her net worth as $985MM. Given that the article was about a year old, I feel comfortable calling her a billionaire. She's about 40 years old. We got on a Zoom call and had a nice chat, just me and her. During much of the call, I was thinking "If I have $1B, I can't see myself spending my day talking to idiots like myself, trying to get one more successful company going. It was really pretty inconceivable to me. But, that's why she is a billionaire and I am not (possibly not the only reason). I am certainly open to the argument that in many cases there is a lot of luck involved, or a lot of inherent advantages, but as BFM talked about, a lot of these folks are just wired differently.Originally posted by BigFatMeanie View Post
I have zero interest in becoming a billionaire because I don't even remotely want to work that hard or take as much risk as they take.
She is also kind of cute, so if any single members of the board, or parents of single young men, want her email, hit me up.

In the book "Shoe Dog", the story about Phil Knight, he talks about the possibility of it all falling apart at any time while he was building it up. They were working off of borrowed money and just barely making the payments and it wasn't until they went public that they had any breathing room. That's probably true for a lot of them.Originally posted by clackamascoug View Post[B]
Billionaires bust through all the bullshit and make it happen - and it's not about money - or opportunity - it's about the bloody knuckles - and the deep down desire to succeed when even your wife is telling you to stop - it's not worth it - but you do it anyway. It's all or nothing. How many times did Huntsman go right to the brink? It's all or nothing. You guys don't have that in you and average people have no where near that in them.

The condescension in all of this is funny. I would be careful being so smug before your ship actually arrives in port.Originally posted by clackamascoug View PostBillionaires bust through all the bullshit and make it happen - and it's not about money - or opportunity - it's about the bloody knuckles - and the deep down desire to succeed when even your wife is telling you to stop - it's not worth it - but you do it anyway. And for the record, I have taken plenty of risks in life (some worked out, some didn't), but I would have to be insane to risk what will be a very comfortable retirement (and a happy marriage) on a scheme to make a really big score at this stage in life. That is not cowardice, that is what we call common sense."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I appreciate the advice - and you were the exception in my mind as I wrote this - even though you do have CEO level talent. I'm (somewhat) aware that you have participated in a project that bore life changing fruit - and I admire that. But you do affirm my point that successful people are the worst candidates for billionairedom - because - they would have to be insane to risk the 100% satisfaction that they've achieved in life for a better Porsche than the one they already have.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

I admit that I should keep my mouth shut - but I'm up to my neck for the Jan 2022 launch - zoom's practically all day - and more than a dozen people working - hundreds of thousand of dollars have been spent - that to me - it's a natural extension of my life. It's like I won the lottery - but can't cash my ticket for 6 months. It's hard to shut my mouth. I'm kind of excited actually - for the life changing events in the next year - who wouldn't be.
Sorry if I've disrupted the calm water of a nice football season.

There's an interesting parallel between clack's description of nascent billionaires and his disclosure about his new venture. Non-risk takers like me would wait until the venture succeeded before announcing anything. Clack, in effect, is leading with his chin here, willing to accept the good-natured joshing that will ensue if it fails, but showing a kind of Ruthian boldness in calling his shot, even though he may whiff. Clack, I sincerely wish you great success, and not just because you'll have to pick up the tab when/if we ever tee it up together. But if you fail, I still tip my cap to you for your intrepid spirit, which I lack.

Clack with a cool $1B to burn would be the most entertaining thing this board has ever seen. That would be awesome."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
