I'm a bit closer to this issue than most on this board, although I don't know Hafen and have never appeared before him. Having read the transcript of the hearing in full, I think the Judge way overreacted. He's apparently got a history of treating the public defender's office this way. Additionally, this attorney did not do anything that a thousand other attorneys haven't done over the years, but I've never heard of another attorney being put in handcuffs and seated with the criminals.Originally posted by Shaka View PostI say good for the judge.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. An example of another incident involving Judge Ackbar.
http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/la...yer-handcuffedIn December, the judge lashed out at a man representing himself and sent him to jail for contempt.
Montreal Carter had tried to get a public defender to represent him on a trespassing charge but was found ineligible. When he showed up for trial, Carter asked for more time to hire a lawyer. Hafen rejected the request, forcing Carter to act as his own attorney.
As he questioned a witness, Carter tried to ask about the 14th Amendment, but the judge said it was irrelevant, according to transcripts from the trial.
Carter responded: “I was never given the opportunity — ”
The judge then said, “The 14th Amendment doesn’t apply to him because — OK, I’ve had enough. You’re now in contempt. Travis, take him to jail. OK? Ten days. That’s what we’re going to do. Ten days. I’m done. We’ll put it back on for the trial in 10 days.”
Carter tried to speak up: “I’m just trying to defend myself.”
Hafen said: “You want to keep it up, and I’ll give you another 10 days?”
The back and forth continued.
“Your honor,” Carter said, “I apologize.”
“I understand,” Hafen replied. “It’s too late.”
“I’m not trying to disrespect you or the — ”
“I warned you continually. You continued to argue with me. I’m not going to put up with that. Ten days’ contempt because of your behavior. OK? And your attitude. You’re going to jail.”
“Your honor, I’m just trying to defend myself. I have no — ”
“You’re going to jail. Do you want another 10 days? This is what I’m talking about.”
The judge stepped off the bench after Carter said, “I’m just apologizing.”
Court records indicate that Hafen later revised the contempt sentence and Carter was released from custody.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Whenever one of my coworkers tells me stories about how crazy things in the organization were twenty years ago, she always sums her story up with, "this place was just crawling with Hafens!"Originally posted by falafel View PostAn example of another incident involving Judge Ackbar.

Judge Ackbar got booted from the bench today, losing by a more than 2-1 ratio. Good riddance.

Plenty in Scientology see what's wrong with scientology but they are afraid to leave, because they will lose their families. Meaning the church tells everyone close to the person leaving to have nothing further to do with them. Spouses, kids, parents, best friends, bosses fire employees, debtors refuse to pay back creditors, clients quit, etc.Originally posted by ByronMarchant View Post
Like I said, scientologists see nothing wrong with scientology until they leave.
Here is an audio of a woman getting labeled Suppressive. Her crimes were to comment on an ex-scientologist's facebook post, read some anti web sites, and talk to a long term (30 years) friend of hers who was labeled suppressive recently, once on the street. She is trying to get out of the charge by denying that she was ever a "real" scientologist. But I've seen scientology excommunicate people who aren't even members, or were last involved 30 years previously.

Daniel: These things get labeled. And they get… You know, people who do these things do get labeled. And so, I didn’t want to all of a sudden just have a label happen when no one had spoken to you in seven, eight months. That’s why I decided to see you.
Sylvia: OK.
Daniel: Because at least it’s… I’m telling you, I wanted to give you the policy. You don’t have to take it if you don’t want to. It’s in the ethics book, as well. It gives the steps if one does want to get back in good standing. Um… that was the main reason. I just didn’t want it to be out of the blue.
Sylvia: OK. All right. What’s going to be out of the blue? What’s coming. What is coming?
Daniel: Like what I’m saying is that if someone commits a suppressive act they get labeled.
Sylvia: So you’re going to actually label me a suppressive?
Daniel: For committing the suppressive acts, yes.
Sylvia: Do you understand what that is going to do to me?
Daniel: I think that the actions you have taken…
Sylvia: I’m telling you right now that I’m not even a member of the church but you’re still labeling me. How does that work?
Daniel: Well, look at the actions you have done. I can just explain they’re covered…
Sylvia: But if I did it as a non-member – I don’t even have a membership. I’ve never had a membership.
Daniel: OK.
Sylvia: So anybody, anybody in this whole planet, whoever spoke with Nick Lister is a suppressive?
Daniel: Well, somehow you’ve had some connection to the org or to the church. I mean I’m seeing it now…
Sylvia: Everybody in this town had had some involvement with the church. The Mayor… Can the mayor not speak to Nick?
Daniel: I think you’re more of a Scientologist than the mayor.
Sylvia: I’m telling you right now I’m not a Scientologist.
Daniel: Fine. Maybe you were more of one.
Sylvia: So you’re going to label me a suppressive? That means my husband has to divorce me. That means I lose half of my clients. That means my son, who is in a band with a Scientologist, who’s about to make a big record, can’t be in that band anymore. Or he has to disconnect from his mother. I have to disconnect from my brother. I’ve lost two to death. And now I’m going to lose to disconnection. Does, does this make any sense?
Daniel: I’m just telling you, you need to look at – take responsibility for your actions that you’ve done.
Sylvia: They weren’t suppressive. There was not any harm intended. I had a communication. I have seen Drew Sweet on the street, say “Hey, Creed. How ya doin?” You know? He responded to a communication. How come he’s not in here having to do this? Why isn’t he labeled a suppressive?
Daniel: I don’t know. Did you report him?
Sylvia: He didn’t report himself? My goodness!
