  • An e-mail was sent to all SPs last week regarding the MTM movie informing them to instruct all members to:

    1) Contact your local cinema and request that they get the movie.
    2) Swamp the theaters on opening weekend in October. Supposedly a strong opening week will trick convince other cinemas to pick up the movie.

For the life of me, I can't understand what they are trying to do here. There is just no way that the average person is going to take part of their leisure time and pay actual money to sit through a promotional movie about a church. Would you pay to go watch a movie about JWs for example? Not a chance. Put it on youtube or something.

Somebody should have raised their hand in a committee meeting. Good grief.

Hopefully it isn't shown on Sundays. Sounds like a good case for entrapment.

        • My bishop's daughter worked for the church's PR department, and told him the following (16 oz Morton Iodized):

The church originally made the film to show in the Legacy theater in the JSM Building. However, after screening it with test audiences (my bishop said they got to screen it back in Feb), the feedback was that the film was documentary-like enough to have a wide release.

Not sure how much of that is the church PR dept hearing only what they wanted to hear in the feedback.

My bishop did say the production quality is several degrees better than any movie the church has made in the past.

So there were no instructions about members getting on rottentomatoes.com and pumping up the user reviews?

Of course, if we are going to get a free pass to go to the movies on Sunday afternoon we'll take it and depending on the user reviews we may even watch the MTM movie.

Ha! That's the piece of the story that got me to remember it too.

ldc and I went to that movie Charly on opening weekend in Eugene. It was like attending Stake Conference, I said we didn't need to go to church on Sunday. We didn't have kids so we maybe didn't.

                  • Only way I am going to see this movie is if it gets me a 6 month tithing exemption.

And that includes if the missionaries bring it over to the house.

                        Yikes!

I seriously have no desire to see this and won't even at the insistence of the SP or MJ. I like 3 minute clips of "I'm a Mormon" but 1.5 hours of it sounds unbearable.

Personally, I'm mostly looking forward to the testimonials on all the little miracles that made each screening possible. #tendermercies

I don't know about that. I think that if the Church were to put together some kind of musical about, say, the Haun's Mill Massacre that showed our adorable religious eccentricities in a favorable light, addressed a few universal themes about how the times they are a-changin', and packaged it all with some catchy tunes á la Fiddler On the Roof, we could have a bona fide hit on our hands.

We were told on Sunday that we all need to go see it so that the movie makes it to Netflix.

Totally agree that it's nutty to think non-LDS people will pay to see this in the theater.
