"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
uh people called it out at the time. it isnt hindsight
That was after the talk was delivered.

I don't think hindsight is needed in thinking that line was a bad look. It isn't like there weren't previously shootings like this at gay clubs.
His talk caused a completely inactive dude to shoot up a night club? Geez, funk.

I didn't say that it caused it. I wouldn't be surprised if the rhetoric from the church about gay people was a contributing factor.
Holland should have been smarter than to use a gun metaphor when talking about the LGBTQ community, considering the history of shootings directed at them.
As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

I don't know how active the kid's grandfather was, but him comparing Jan 6 to Concord and Lexington and saying it was a response to tyranny makes it seem like musket bearing is a sentiment that isn't foreign to the family.

The lack of awareness of mental health issues by many posters in this thread is alarming. The issues that have afflicted this young man and contributed to his heinous actions have nothing to do with any external influence. To suggest otherwise is woefully ignorant and moronic. I hope you are never put in a position where you have to deal with a significant mental health episode either among your family or personally. Your posts here reflect the fact you are not prepared, and will not weather it well.

How can you possibly know this? Or know anything about what issues afflicted him and contributed to his actions? You are just as clueless as the rest of us.

Where the hell did this come from?
Are you really claiming that baseline mental health issues can't be exacerbated by external factors? If so, that is woefully ignorant.
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

What is known is that the church or a social media message, or sermon is not the reason for the behaviour period. There is no other argument that can be made in favour of that line of reasoning, Based on the reporting that is available about the individual, mental health issues are at play here.

Baseline mental health issues are exacerbated by many different external factors. To Suggest the church or a sermon, or a message on social media is THE PRIMARY (as is being suggested in this thread) factor is ignorant and moronic.
Really, there is no information either way to confirm or deny that the church, a sermon or talk, or any other relationship to the church was a cause, however insignificant, in this kid's actions.

I read your post. I am incredibly sorry for what your son and your family are going through. Out of respect, I won't comment on this topic further. Best wishes to the tooblue family.

Hijacking a tragedy like this to grind an axe against the church is pretty low.
