Ain't no one arguing anything like that here.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostIt may go down, because it is a tool that predators use, not because consumption turns a good person into a rapist like is being argued here.

So should byu be instructing students on consent to sexual activity during freshman orientation? Do you think it would lead to lower instances of sexual assault? I'm talking about teaching something similar to this video.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThat's funny.
Hey, alcohol isn't the problem with drunk driving. We just need to teach people to be better drivers!

As for alcohol, I do think that freshman orientation should have instruction on responsible alcohol consumption including not imbibing until of legal age. Hell, my law school orientation had a presentation on addiction and substance abuse. I was always shocked given the instances of substance abuse in the legal profession that byu law omitted this.

None. But someone I know did and indicated it was not part of it. Has that changed?Originally posted by falafel View PostHow many times have you been through BYU law orientation?

Tell us again how this is not about BYU.

Yeah we know you are talking about. That was a number of years ago. Did that person specifically go looking for it? Did you ask at the time the orientation occurred? Did they keep all of the materials/handouts from the orientation? And I'm guessing since you ask whether the (assumed) policy has changed, you don't have more than this one (questionable) data point.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostNone. I went to Utah for law school. I don't remember them going over substance abuse issues among the legal profession during law school orientation (or any part of law school, for that matter). Therefore, I conclude that it was not included. Then again, I don't remember a single thing that was covered in that orientation, so I am left with the conclusion that they covered nothing at all.Last edited by falafel; 04-19-2017, 08:43 PM.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. This is just stupid. "Here, go ahead and ingest this substance that will impair your judgement. Remember to be sure to make rational decisions."
Do we ever suspend people for just being dumb?Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Not everyone who drinks does so to get intoxicated. It is absolutely possible to have a drink without it impairing judgment. You can make rational decisions while drinking responsibly.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostThis is just stupid. "Here, go ahead and ingest this substance that will impair your judgement. On college campuses where there are problems with sexual assault, I'm sure a high percentage of drinkers don't drink to get intoxicated. So definitely no big problems with impaired judgement vis-a-vis consent and no need to address alcohol on college campuses as a part of the effort to combat sexual assault.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostNot everyone who drinks does so to get intoxicated. Like drunk texting, or maybe posting something as ridiculous as this?Originally posted by mpfunk View PostDrinking doesn't fundamentally change who you are and it doesn't compel you to do things you ordinary wouldn't.
One of the classic blunders, next to fighting a land war in Asia, is taking an indefensible position in a debate. I don't know how much you drank in college, but college drinkers drink to get drunk, and the more they drink, the more they want to drink. They stop not because they think they should, but because it's late, they're out of booze, or they are tired. My experience is admittedly anecdotal, but it's based on a fairly large sample size. Further, almost 40% of criminals under state or federal supervision were under the influence of alcohol when they committed a crime. Try telling them that alcohol didn't influence their behavior and that they would have committed the crime if they had been sober.

Great post. Clearly Funk hasn't heard of angry or happy drunks. Also there a lot of inadvertent rapists because drunk people hooking up and then regretting the it the next morning is practically an international sport.Originally posted by cowboy View PostLike drunk texting, or maybe posting something as ridiculous as this?
