Some, including Ammon were arrested by force, on the highway. It's pretty hard to argue against that when one of the people were shot and killed. Where the comparison is appropriate is how the police surrounded the refuge compound after the above event and the people inside were allowed to come surrender under their own circumstances. Even allowing the last holdout to spend 90 on a phone call with a couple conservative radio hosts that did just about everything in their power to push him to shooting himself instead of surrendering. He's probably breathing the biggest sigh of relief.

That was sort of my point about the distinction between the Bundys and the Standing Rock protestors. The Bundys and friends were basically allowed to hang out as long as they wanted on the federal land. The FBI had them surrounded forever, but did not move in to remove them by force, even though they had the right to do so. Yes, they were arrested later on the road against their will, but the FBI pretty much did as much as they could to reduce the chance of a violent ending. Too bad they couldn't achieve that in the end.

All I know is that as a government employee that occasionally works in and around Bundy allotments, this verdict scares the shit out of me. I'm curious to hear what the Feds will be telling all of their field personnel.

Obama has pardoned around 70 people thus far. Nixon pardoned nearly 1,000 (but not himself!); Reagan pardoned over 400; and W pardoned nearly 200. Obama has a lot of work to do in the next couple of months.

The NBC piece refers to commutations or reductions in sentences, which aren't the same thing as pardons. Here's the pardons scoreboard. I often don't have a problem with commutations in many instances--the person may have committed the crime, and it will stay on his record, but sometimes the sentences are excessive or changed circumstances make a shorter sentence appropriate.

Depends on if you count a commutation as a pardon. I guess they are different, but both benefit the accused/convicted. I'd definitely rather be pardoned.

Why do people assume that pardons or commutations are bad things? Due to the War on Drugs, mandatory minimum sentencing, etc. we have tons of citizens locked up on ridiculous charges and/or sentences grossly disproportionate to the crimes involved. Obama needs to get busy.
