Environmental atrocities from the past don't mean we can't question current environmental law. I don't think anyone is advocating eliminating the ESA. We are advocating changes however.

Yeah, I am guessing if we didn't kill off those large numbers of buffalo they would have wiped out those poor little turtles for sure. It is a good thing they had someone looking out for them.

Has anyone said you can't question environmental law? Certainly not me.

                • I guess Harry Reid and his kid have entered the fray now saying the pass the rancher got won't last.

They are saying you just can't have a civil society and let people break the law. I guess I wasn't well informed. I thought this was about some tortoise dying off not a law being broken.

I guess Reid and kid are also big supporters of enforcing immigration laws. I disagree with them there and agree with the U.S. Attorney general. There are some laws that you should enforce and some you don't need to.

Subtract a few conjunctions and replace the reference to Harry Reid with "Brother Reid," and that post was a solid 6.8 on the GV scale!

Dude, do you know how old I am? I can't even remember what a conjunction is.

I have a close friend who works for the BLM in Cedar City. I'm thinking about sending this to him since it's far more cogent and interesting than anything he's been able to explain to me.
He told me that the cost of all the cops & law enforcement is stretching into the millions.

Also, Iron County's government is thinking that this case somehow allows them to go and round up some of the wild horses out by Lund & Modena.

My friend sent along this write-up that lays out the blow-by-blow legal battle over the past 20 years

We pay tax dollars to have our public lands managed, to have equal access under the law, and to have the law enforced. Mr. Bundy has made his right to graze his cattle more important than all other interests. According to Mary Jo Rugwell, who used to be the BLM Southern Nevada District Manager, “There are hundreds of ranchers that follow the rules. They have grazing permits, pay their fees and manage their cattle as they are supposed to. A lot of other users of public lands also pay for permits and follow their stipulations. It’s just not fair to all of those people that Mr. Bundy does what he wants and doesn’t follow the rules (7).” He, and others like him or supporting him, may not like the Endangered Species Act and may not like federal law or control, but not liking something does not excuse one from breaking the law. Furthermore, not believing in laws does not make them any less real, valid, or enforced. One does not change the law by breaking the law.

Yeah, that's what I'm understanding also. He hasn't paid his BLM fees for over 20 years because of his view of federal/state land laws. So while the feds certainly looked bad with the excessive use of force, I don't have a lot of sympathy for Bundy. He has strong feelings about land issues, and I'm sure he has some valid points. But his situation is the same as someone who willfully does not pay taxes.

I wonder if all those in my FB feed who are 'wanting to stand shoulder to shoulder' with Bundy know these details...

To say that it's "just not fair" to the rest of us permittees, like the BLM is just looking out for us, is a pretty disingenuous pile of crap. There's no doubt that Bundy is in the wrong, but people are standing by him because, to them, this case represents the feds and the left using laws in ways that congress never intended to trample people's rights and pursue a radical agenda.

Bundy had an exclusive right that nobody else had when he owned a grazing permit. He paid for that right, making it an asset, and the BLM, as they often do, decided to take much of that right away by reducing the number of animals he could graze there. In doing so, they reduced the value of his grazing permit without compensating him for it. Such an act is illegal with any other government taking. Where Bundy went wrong is choosing to handle it by fighting the government on his own terms rather than fighting through the legal system, but that doesn't make the BLM's actions any less wrong.

Not arguing here, so don't take it that way.
The article mentions that "in 1997 . . . active grazing permits in tortoise habitat were purchased by Clark County under the Clark County Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Program. Mr. Bundy rejected a tentative proposal to compensate him for any stockwater rights or range improvements he might have in his former allotment. It should be noted that all other ranchers who grazed in the Bunkerville allotment did accept the compensation and have been complying with federal law and the agencies enforcing it" ?

Or is this a different issue/episode?
