  • I just had an epiphany.

I think the construction of mini-temples is a way for church leaders to project the image of rapid growth when in fact the Church is shrinking or stable at best in terms of active membership.

This conference, they announced no new temples. Sounds like an inflection point to me.

They are probably going to have to start closing and selling temples within the next decade.

Are you asking from a spiritual/doctrinal standpoint or from a policy standpoint?

From a policy standpoint it must be an Elder and the Bishop or one of his two counselors (they changed this with the most recent update of the GHOI - it used to be that any member of the Bishopric would suffice).

From a spiritual/doctrinal standpoint it all depends on whether you wear pants or skirts to church

I know of a particular chapel they sold before. If I remember correctly, it was in Shelley, Idaho, and was purchased by a member family with a lot of kids.

I don't know of any temples they've sold.

It was kind of odd the long explanation that was given by TSM as to why no new temples were announced. It's almost like we expect them to be announced now and when we don't we take it as a sign of stagnant growth.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Absolutely. I've never once thought of the priesthood when thinking of Mormon society. Within the society, priesthood means very little to me.

When I was 12 and my father wasn't home, my mother used to ask me to pick who was going to say the blessing on the food because I was the highest ranking priesthood holder. I thought it was weird.

My mother has done the same with me in my father's absence. But it isn't a priesthood thing, rather a cultural thing. It's me being the man of the house and accepting the responsibilities of my father. This is occurs all the time outside of the Church.

Less and less, though. I think most would see it as a thing of the past, and even today I wouldn't say it's common.

My mother used to do that too. We haven't instituted such a practice in our home. In my absence, family prayers aren't an issue since we take turns. As for the blessing on the food, I guess chaos ensues when I'm not around.
