    Coffee fans... Postum is back:

Postum was originally sold through Postum.com; as of December 2012, a few select retail stores, mainly in Utah, began to sell the product on their shelves. Some of the retail chains in Utah that have begun to sell the product include Ream’s, Harmons and Ridley’s, as well as several other individual marketplaces.

On its website, Postum markets itself as “an alternative choice for those with religious dietary restrictions such as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and Seventh-day Adventists.”

I always liked it as a kid. In Guatemala a drink called cafe de maiz (corn coffee) was popular, especially among Mormons. People made it at home by baking (burning, really) dried corn and then grinding it up.

Looks like The Vermont Country Store is making Postum available online for a mere $16.95. Seems a bit high to me.

If you were one of the disappointed fans in 2007 when Postum™ disappeared from the shelves, then you’re sure to perk up now that its original formula is available once again. A household mainstay introduced by C.W. Post in 1895, Postum is a healthful coffee alternative that combines skillfully roasted wheat germ with hearty molasses for a one-of-a-kind savory beverage that satisfies with its unmistakable rich aroma and robust flavor. Postum is naturally caffeine free and smooth tasting with no acidity or bitterness so it won’t cause sleepless nights, high blood pressure, or digestive upsets often linked to coffee and tea—making it a natural choice for health-conscience individuals and those with dietary, health, or religious restrictions. Just one teaspoon of Postum mixed into 8 ounces of hot or cold water is all it takes to enjoy America’s all-time favorite anytime beverage. 8 oz. jar.

Rich, robust flavor from custom-roasted wheat bran and sweet molasses
        Naturally caffeine free
A healthy alternative for those with dietary, health, or religious dietary restrictions
Smooth flavor without tannic acid found in coffee
        Enjoy hot or cold
Postum fans are buzzing about the comeback of their beloved beverage—naturally caffeine free with full-bodied flavor from custom-roasted wheat bran and sweet molasses.

Is decaf coffee against the WoW? I haven't had Postum, but I have tried Pero, which is nasty. Doesn't make sense that someone would opt for Postum over a good decaf.

I think it is less an offense against the Word of Wisdom than against wisdom itself.

The entire membership in Costa Rica drinks cafe de maiz every morning. Ticos give coffee to toddlers in bottles, so giving up coffee was one of the hardest things to get investigators to do. Cafe de maiz smells like burnt corn. I never tried it, but for some people, it helped them fill the gap.

This was such a bad start to a potentially good thread.
I think coffee may be the most interesting food out there. There's nothing else that I can think of where the range of flavor can vary so greatly from really, really bad to really good, and where the user has so much influence on the outcome (assuming you're not just ordering a latte from Starbucks, obviously). I've been pretty obsessed with mastering the perfect brew these last few years and while I can put Starbucks to shame, I still haven't gotten it. This is on my mind because I was driving through Vegas yesterday and stopped by my favorite coffee place anywhere and had a 30 minute conversation about coffee with the barista, who is some kid in his mid twenties who you wouldn't guess would know the first thing about coffee. Barbecue is the only other food I can talk with someone for a half hour about. Both are a fun mix of food and chemistry.
Any other coffee geeks out there? Any secrets to share? Favorite origins, drinks, brewing methods?
(Just to avert the eyerolls from an admittedly wannabe rebel progmo/MoSto flavor that this discussion could take, I'll make it clear that 1) this is not meant as an anti Church statement in any way and 2) this is my only real "vice" that I'm not willing to let go of that keeps me out of the 100% Mormon looking crowd. Like barbecue, I just like the subject.)

Cue DDD on bad breath, bad teeth, and how coffee has nothing to do with a good food scene. (Admittedly, it is the one thing the French do really poorly.)

My exposure to coffee happened at work. I had zero knowledge of different coffees. So the brand at work was the one I got used to. When I started drinking elsewhere, I kept thinking it was pretty watered down, the kind that Topper might even be able to choke down. I hadn't realized that the coffee at work is a pretty dark roast, and that it had set my coffee barometer at the strong end of the spectrum.

Yeah it's bitter, but man the warm blanket it envelops me in the morning is worth it.

We have no good places where I live, and there's only one in St George that is pretty good, and only with the right barista, so I try to sample the local establishments pretty much every time I travel. Vegas is the place I'm in the most and I'd say I've tried pretty close to every non Starbucks place there. This one's right off the freeway by Fremont street. It's worth the two minute detour.
