To me, political position is the only real difference between Reid & Romney. Categorically, they're the same - well respected men in positions of national leadership. So, political ideology is an important part (to Mormons) of what makes a good representative Mormon (to the Mormons in the survey).

I think ideology is important but so is success. Mormons tend to be conservative, but they also like to see their own do well. Not only is co-religionist Reid the wrong ideology to many Mormons but his comments could also impede a fellow mormon from reaching the pinnacle of political success.

I have always like Reid being a Democrat. It indicates that Mormons are not as in lock step as others would have us believe. It makes me laugh that to date no liberal pundit has even been concerned about his religious beliefs and the various skeletons in that faith's closet. It also makes me chuckle how much he upsets fellow mormons I know. Saying that, accusing someone of sullying their faith is being an asshole.

Not sure where he joined the church but he's an alum. The Outdoor Engagement Center is named for him. It's a pretty cool program that gets kids rock-climbing in Zion or doing internships for the Park Service and stuff.

Both he and his wife were from Nevada and both went to CCCC. They then went up to Logan to go to USU. IIRC, both came from less than optimal family environments and that was one of their attractions to the LDS belief system. If it gets guys to admit their names are Vicky, good for them!

Senator Reid grew up in Searchlight, NV but attended high school (maybe some lower grades a well) in Boulder City. A commute of about 40 miles. He would hitch hike to Boulder City Sunday night/Monday morning and lived with an LDS family during the week before hitch hiking back to Searchlight to help for the weekend.

Anyone that can get out of Searchlight to become one of the most powerful people in Washington is pretty impressive.

I get a kick out of people who demonize Reid. He's playing a game (and doing it pretty well, apparently). Saying nasty things about the opposition is no more "dickish" than hitting a guy hard in football--it's part of the game. If you do it outside of the game, you're a dick; in the game, you're just good.
