I'm not saying I could do any better! I'm just not a fan!

One of my best friends is a professional violinist. I asked her if she'd be willing to contribute. She seems to think that the music John uses is "sweet" and wouldn't change a thing. So, er.... I guess it all depends on what people are willing to contribute.......... (hint).......

Grant Hardy. He and his wife Heather also have a mormonstories interview.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI've been listening to some of these in the background while I work last couple weeks. Also some of the Mormon expressions podcasts.
The Daymon Smith podcast was fantastic. Highly recommend it. I've heard many of you mention it before. I loved his testimony at the end. Very cool that he put himself out there like that. I was actually surprised he is such a literal believer in Joseph Smith. But he appears to have a strong testimony of the church.
The George Miller Masonry podcasts at Mormon expression. Not sure I buy all his connections, but very informative.
What I'm very interested in:
research, historical analysis, textual analysis of scripture, detective work possibly explaining the foundations of some aspects of Mormonism
What I'm not interested in:
people whining about how hard it is to be an intellectual Mormon, or how the church oppresses people, or complaining about what the church is doing they don't agree with...WHA WHA WHA call the WHAMBULANCE! This describes most of the podcasts on both sites. I skip through those.
Any suggestions on what to check out?
BTW - Grant just (yesterday) gave a three hour lecture / discussion of the BOM to the Community of Christ during their conference in Nauvoo. The BOM has really fallen out of favor with the COC. They've been reading Dr. Hardy's writings on it and thought they'd like to have him come talk to them. Of course he cleared it with the Brethren before he accepted the invitation. Although he's in his Stake Presidency, he's definitely on their 'watch list.'

One of my favorites is the Armand Mauss interview. It was one of the first ones JD did so it is quite early in the list. He gives an analysis of the cycical nature of church growth and liberalization/retrenchment from a sociological perspective. There is a discussion at the end about whether or not the church should ever apologize. He gives a compelling argument as to why they should not. Fascinating stuff. I think you would enjoy it.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI've been listening to some of these in the background while I work last couple weeks. When he was putting together his Readers Edition of the BOM he did so in full public view - circulated initial versions through various departments of several schools, including BYU. Several people at BYU reported to higer-ups about the heretical manuscript, and e got several phone calls from SLC about it - from some very senior people. His wife's uncle was in the FQ70 and did a lot of smoothing over of some very ruffled feathers. He came away from it all with a not-so-subtle "Be very careful. We're watching everything you publish."Originally posted by UtahDan View PostWhat is your evidence for this?
But a couple of years later, he was called to be a member of his Stake Presidency, so they must be convinced that he didn't have any ill-will in his writings on LDS history/BOM. But still, he wouldn't dream of accepting an invitation to speak to the COC without clearing it with SLC first. Although he offered, they declined to get advanced copy of his speaking notes. The response he got was basically "That would be fine. Thanks for asking. Please report back and tell us how things went."

ER could play better. It's like the Von Trapp family at his house, only with instruments instead of yodeling.Originally posted by Rosebud View PostI know that music. It IS lovely. ER?"More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

"Time Out For Women" makes it sound like women are being sent to their rooms for misbehavior.Originally posted by NorthwestUteFan View PostMy wife goes to the "Time Out For Women" here in Seattle every year. It sells out Benaroya Hall every year (about 2500), and they have an impressive lineup of guest speakers every year. It is sponsored by Deseret Book, but my guess is the cost of the tickets covers expenses, as RF suggests.
However every author has books to sell, every musician is selling CDs, and others are selling trinkets of all types. If it is mentioned in the conference hall, it is available for purchase on tables outside the door. My wife, mother sister, and sisters-in-law each walked out with >$100 worth of goodies purchased in the midst of their spiritual highs.
It is a wonderful experience for her every year and I am glad she gets so much out of it, but I can't help but poke a little bit of fun...Last edited by Sleeping in EQ; 08-18-2011, 08:40 AM.We all trust our own unorthodoxies.
