I sometimes wonder if he didn't start what he did whether it was inevitable that someone else would or whether it is the right combination of personality and circumstance.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View PostI generally don't care for cult leaders, but I have to admit that John Dehlin is growing on me.

This is what they discussed in the first hour: Sexual Allegations against Joseph SmithOriginally posted by Raketemensch View PostAnyone check out the most recent MoSto podcast? Absolutely unbelievable stuff (for me). Joseph essentially offering William Law to Emma as a substitute due to his having multiple women. And Emma going along with it, only to be shot down by the Laws? Twice??? Also some interesting tidbits about the council of the 50. Anyway I'm curious what others thought of it. Lots for me I'd never heard before. Blew my mind in a not so good way.
In Joseph's era Utopian societies were not uncommon. Open marriages and experiments with sexuality were the norm in these societies. The podcast made me wonder if early Mormonism was simply another such society caught up in that trend. Only to morph into something that would seem quite foreign to early Mos...

Yet he makes $40K per year for his part-time gigOriginally posted by eldiente View PostDhelin is a poor interviewer. His self-absorbed comments detract from the interviewees.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I don't mind the self-absorbed comments as much as the poor voice inflection. He is typically not nearly as good at expressing his ideas as his guests are and he simplifies too many concepts so as to butcher the argument. He still does a pretty good job though. He gets the interviewee to discuss the things that are most interesting. I've enjoyed a lot of the stuff.Originally posted by eldiente View PostDhelin is a poor interviewer. Does anybody know about this? The first is a trailer to Kendall Wilcox's movie/documentary. The next is a BYU student who is gay. They are both produced with the name 'Far Between'. When is this documentary (ahem) coming out?Originally posted by UtahDan View PostSounds like BYU has let Kendall Wilcox go. Openly gay Prof. From what I am gathering both he and BYU ultimately found that situation intolerable, though he is defending BYU. He has a relatively recent mo sto podcast interview that is incredibly sad.

Maybe this is old news (let me know if this has been posted elsewhere), but it appears that John Dehlin has been involved in a very ugly fight with the Maxwell Institute. In a nutshell, he heard a rumor that they were going to publish a critique about Mormon Stories so he quickly went on the attack (including an appeal to a GA) and got the article squelched. All of this without ever seeing the contents of the article. You can get the gist here:

Seems like an incredibly stupid and hypocritical move by Dehlin. That's a real shame. He has had some terrific guests in the past year, including Dan Peterson himself! Hard to imagine that he will be able to continue to attract good guests with juvenile behavior like this. If you mean "insecure" in the sense that they backed down on publishing the article, then yes I agree with you.Originally posted by SeattleUte View Postlol @ the maxwell institute for doing this. Insecure aren't they.
I am a MoSto fan, but this is indefensible. Let them publish the article and then respond to it, but to go behind the scenes and block the publication prior to even seeing it is nuts."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? The Maxwell Institute has a really ugly habit of publishing, or even worse, just insinuating, ad hominem attacks (Michael Quinn's sexuality comes to mind...wtf?). If I heard they were about to publish something about me, particularly if it could hurt my wife, my kids, or former guests on the show, I'd try to stop it too.
That said, it's lame of John to publish Peterson's email without publishing his own.
But really--indefensible? That's pretty strong language when you don't even have close to all the facts. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
