If there's one thing I have learned as an adult in the church, it is this. It can't be stated strongly enough. Only the individuals directly involved know what is going on.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostLike Elder Cook just said, we don't know the unique circumstances of every situation. You have no idea what is going on with Davies enough to make any sort of judgment. Neither do I.Last edited by LA Ute; 04-02-2011, 10:44 AM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

If they ever decide to add a Present Eyring role in the BoM play, I suggest they have Alan Arkin play it.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

My point is more about the attitudes of members towards the situation, not the situation itself.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostIf there's one thing I have learned as an adult in the church, it is this. But I agree with both you and LiveCoug."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

From a church perspective Davies is still a member and he's even still enrolled at the church sponsored school. The only thing that bugged me was him not being able to play ball.Originally posted by FMCoug View PostThere is undoubtedly some truth to this. But you have to admit that we are a very justice, works focused people. Take Davies' for example. If the overall theme of members discussing it were the young man, his salvation, the repentance process, etc. I might agree. But overwhelmingly, whenever it was discussed it was about "sticking to our principles". Which apparently are very justice-focused.
It seems that from a church perspective mercy is being shown."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I don't disagree with that. I don't know the situation so you may be right. Again, my point is how about individual members approach these things.Originally posted by Eddie Jones View PostFrom a church perspective Davies is still a member and he's even still enrolled at the church sponsored school. In any case, the last thing we need is another Davies' thread. It was just an example. Prop 8 is another. And I'm not even referring to the church's stance. I'm referring to how many members seem to have used it as an excuse to let their homophobia run rampant. Hate the sin, not the sinner, seems not have applied in many cases."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

The Church of BYU is not the church of Jesus CristoOriginally posted by FMCoug View PostWhy is it that Mormonism in practice seems so different than General Conference talks? I hear these talks and then I think of stuff like the Davie's incident, Prop 8, and the justice/fire and brimstone focus of so many Mormons and I don't get it.
I will be live blogging conference from Leblon beach.

I couldn't find conference on Lodge Net.
I can see the ocean from my hotel window.
It's cloudy, cool and breezy.
Suze Orman is on PBS with her "The Money Class".
I think I'm getting as much good advice from her as I would have from conference.
As I write this, I remember that I could probably watch conference on-line. Never had to do that before, so I didn't think of it. Maybe I'll watch afternoon session.
It's too bad that the Priesthood Session is super, dooper secret and can't be accessed on-line.

I will be live blogging conference from Leblon beach. One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

I'm out this session since I'm at a baseball game. Hopefully they used the break to remove those red flowers that were visible over the speakers left shoulder. The disproportionate color scheme was really bugging me."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. I came in in the middle of Packer's talk and heard him talking about William Tyndale. I thought this sounded familiar and wondered if it was a repeat of a previous session. Thanks to the Corpus, I found that he himself told the story in Conference in 2005. But more recently Elder Christofferson talked about Tyndale -- in last April's Conference.I have nothing else to say at this time.

he also recycled the story about the mother dying in childbirth. I haven't looked it up, but I'm quite sure he's used that before.Originally posted by Parrot Head View PostI came in in the middle of Packer's talk and heard him talking about William Tyndale. I walked in and Packer was talking about how we need to refer to ourselves as "Latter-Day Saints" and not "mormons". I thought they gave up on that crap back when they started mormon.org, but I guess not.Originally posted by Parrot Head View PostI came in in the middle of Packer's talk and heard him talking about William Tyndale.
