  • We got a new bishop three months ago, so this was our first tithing settlement with him. It went well. We told him we were full tithe payers, he noted it as such, looked at the donations summary, saw nothing in the tithing column, and said "Great!" We were on our way in no time.

It depends, do you want your fast offerings to go to needy people in your stake or are you okay with them being used for needy people in other areas of the world? If you want them to stay close to home then pay them to your home ward. If you want them to help others outside your stake then you can continue to pay them to HQ.

I thought the church doesnt have seperate accounts for each ward? What I mean is don't they clear all the local accounts every monday and put it all in one bucket anyways? If so would it be so hard to match your member ID and donation with your ward? Seems like a pretty easy thing to do but apparently the church's donations department is stuck in 1970.

It's all an accounting trick. Fake numbers on paper. The cash is swept as you suggest.

              • We were asked to come in Sunday best for Tithing Settlement. Our time was on Saturday night past 8:00 pm. I had been working in the garage and yard so I just came in my work clothes, my wife wore a dress, and my kids were in their pajamas. The bishop gave each of my kids a tithing settlement printout and asked them if they were full tithe payers. My five year old son said that he didn't have any money, but if he did he would call it "cash". The Bishop declared them full tithe payers and gave them candy canes.

Yes and no. The cash isn'nt physically at the stake level, but it is tracked at that level (at least this is what my previous bishops have told me when I was WFC). Just because the cash doesn't sit at the stake level doesn't mean it can't be accounted for at a stake level. I'm sure you've seen money pools or cash pool structures in corporations that allow for the holding company to manage cash through intercompany accounts. I imagine it works the same way between the stakes and the church.

It's not even swept. There is no local account; the money is deposited directly to the master account.

It is. Many stake presidents pay attention to whether their stakes are net fast offering contributors or net fast offering users, and they use the aggregated ward-level, local data to make that determination. Each unit can see in its accounting records how much money it received in fast offerings (which is deposited into the master account) and how much fast offering assistance was disbursed (via checks that clear from the master account).

                      • I went to tithing settlement last week and I mentioned to the bishop that I pay electronically and that is why it shows zero on his statement. He shrugged his shoulders and said that that he didn't even look at the numbers.

My bishop said the same last year. I asked why it was necessary, "Return and Report, I guess" was his response. Seems like such a silly exercise, but it makes my wife happy, so we'll keep doing it.

I had a long ongoing debate with my wife about tithing settlement this year. I tried to convince her that we could save ourselves and the bishop some time if I simply e-mailed him our status. She won (we attended) but I think she is just about convinced that it is mostly pointless.

How does one pay tithing electronically? My wife pays the tithing and I always complain that we are paying more than 10%, she then says, "no we aren't, repent". Well, I looked at the budget and...we paid 20% tithing this year. Grrrr. I am going to take over the tithing.
