Rate the newly discovered locket photo purporting to be Joseph Smith.

A friend of mine who is into early church history way more than I am is convinced the photo is of Joseph’s cousin George A Smith. Based upon this older picture of GAS, it is a compelling argument.

There is some resemblence. I think the biggest issue with that theory is that GAS would have been in his mid-20s when that photo was likely taken. Not sure that looks like a fresh faced 2o year old. But it could be.

Another issue I have with the purported JS photo is that this dude looks relatively fit (judging by his face). I seem to recall JS being described as a bit portly, although now I'm questioning that.

Your second point. I’ve never heard that. In fact always assumed the opposite. In my mind he was tall (for the time) but athletically built. But that is purely based upon my own internal visualization

Hmmm. Yeah, I read some descriptions just now that trend towards the athletic more than the portly. But they do describe him as having a full barrel chest. I guess that, combined with pictures like this, have tainted my perception.

Emma spoke of Joseph's reaction to paintings done in his lifetime (possibly even this one, though that is disputed):

[It] hung first in the Mansion House and afterward in the Nauvoo House in possession of the Prophet’s widow, Emma Smith. Upon visiting her, in the winter of 1875-76, she entertained me very hospitably and showed me the painting, then hanging in her bedroom in the Nauvoo House. I asked her if it were a good likeness of the Prophet. She replied, “No, He could not have a good portrait—his countenance was changing all the time.” I then asked her what he thought of it and she replied: “I can tell you that, for I asked him and he said: ‘Emma, that is a nice painting of a silly boy, but it don’t look much like a Prophet of the Lord.’"

The painting of Brigham Young is hilarious. He has the Orangutan arms along with the 2010 Kyle Whittingham front butt. That said, there are aspects of the face in the painting that strongly resemble Young's later photos -- the nose, mouth, chin, shape of face, etc.

I was just thinking about this the other day. It seems like the noise has died down, and everyone is settling into the position of, well, we probably can’t ever say for sure.

I don’t know nearly enough about these methods to say how authoritative they are. There is a part of me that thinks they just prove that Joseph had a face. I would like to see some expert play devils advocate and do all these same tests and analyses on Hyrum’s mask. I half expect they would match well to his too.

but I still want it to be Joseph.
