      Exactly!

Ironically, that would never happen in our ward (lots of PhD's). We sometimes have the opposite problem, including a couple of members that routinely introduce themselves as Dr. _______ in church.

I wouldn't say that there is an overly academic or intellectual approach to our discussions, but there is some amusing academic windbaggery and showing off from time to time.

Only when it comes to reading.

Well if you aren't sure you cant really blame me for getting it wrong, can you?

You are unsure about a lot in this post. I understand what you meant. I think we all did. Too bad your point is obscured by your poor choice of language.
        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

lol... tell me about it. We've got the same around here except that it's maybe a bit more sophisticated than referring to oneself as Dr. ________. Gets old.

              • Sigh. I should have stayed away.

We actually had a GREAT sacrament meeting this week. Missionary themed. The WML spoke about Mormon culture vs. the Gospel and described what the ward family was like when they lived in Boston vs. here. His wife is a convert and she spoke as well. Talked about how she has had issues over the year and offended people due to not fitting in. Also mentioned that she thinks that is the biggest issue with convert retention (and I think I have posted that here as well).

My wife and I wondered if they've got bugs in our house or something. We were just having this very discussion the other night with our 15 year old. Who has had some struggles here because she is much more the sassy outspoken Texan than the Stepford Utah girl. As my wife describes it, Utah is vanilla, she is salsa.

Anyway, good to here there is still crazy shit going on all over even if my ward had a glimmer of hope on one Sunday. I can now return to my regularly scheduled Mormon Culture hating.

So in essence, they play up to something they don't believe in because they think the congregation will think lesser of them if they don't.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

And sorry if that's offensive to anyone. Um... I didn't mean it that way. It's just that diversity is a good thing in all its forms. Too many extremely smart people in one place just causes a different set of problems. That's all.

WAIT. Let me clarify. What I mean by "here" is the place where I live. I am NOT referring to CUF. (Just in case there was a miscommunication or two.) Eeek!

Of course. I post something about Utah (actually not even about Utah ... I said Mormon culture ... it just happens to much more prevalent here for obvious reasons) and instead of a discussion on the substance of my post, it's slam FM time.

                              • This thread is somewhat ironic, or maybe not depending on the intent of the author. But it has me wondering whether people actually learn "new" stuff in Church, and if so, how often.

I'm not talking about "I knew that already but it was a nice reminder..." I'm referring to leaving the class or meeting and thinking, "I had no idea..." or "I never knew that." I would imagine that Church may not be designed to promulgate "new" concepts or ideas on a weekly basis but, for better or worse, my curiosity here focuses solely on such.

I submit that the opportunity to learn something new is there but the pragmatist in me thinks that it isn't on a weekly basis. In fact, the "newness" likely diminishes over time to the point where you may have truly "heard it all before." I don't view it as a negative, simply a reality. I didn't leave college every day feeling like everything was all new, either.

How often do you truly learn something "new" in Church? It would be interesting to have a thread dedicated to that (this one is clearly intended to be a parody, focusing on the bizarro stuff we hear in Church...no prob with that, either) to see how often people are learning new things in Church.

                                Sorry for the threadjack.
