For better or worse*, we no longer have a HC Sunday each month. I figured that their 2 main duties were speaking every month and church court, so I'm not sure what they do any more. Maybe those courts keep them busier than I thought.

(*When I was in the Bishopric - I appreciated the occasional week I didn't have to ask someone to speak. As a regular old congregation member now, I appreciate hearing from members of the ward.)

Maybe I need to relocate to Davis County - the place where many of my ancestors homesteaded. Here's my Dallas area ward schedule:
      3/13: HC Speaker
      3/20: Stake Conference
3/27: F&T Meeting (on Easter Sunday)
      4/3: General Conference
      4/10: HC Speaker

We only have HC speakers every quarter.

I've never been that bothered by HC speakers. i guess if the HC speakers were that bad you would get several people volunteering to speak in their place.

Some are actually pretty good. But I find that some of them used to get a little preachy. I envisioned the Stake President telling them about some fault of our Stake that needed to be addressed, and them taking it on like President Packer did the Gays.

          • We have HC speakers once a month. But we are small and appreciate them coming. They actually send 2 to speak those sundays because we don't have enough people to even provide another speaker to speak with them. They do that for us and the two branches around us. The rest of the wards only get one. They also don't some up on months with stake conference or ward conference.

Quick question: are they high councilors or high councilmen? I always said members of the high council to avoid having to think about it. I am inclined to go with the former.

High councilors is better so that it's an easier transition when the ladyfolk start getting the priesthood.

The stake presidency calls 12 high priests to form the stake high council (see D&C 102:1). If an elder is called to serve on the high council, he must be ordained a high priest before he is set apart.

Under the direction of the stake presidency, high councilors help oversee the work of the Church in the stake. They have advisory and administrative responsibilities as described in the following paragraphs.

                    • We have a HC from our ward. After our block of meetings on Sunday he was walking by the bishops office. He looked like crap. Suit was wrinkled, his tie was loose and his eyes and face looked like they were exhausted. He had been in meetings and other church related stuff since 6:30am that morning (this encounter was around 6:45pm). I felt bad for the guy. Apparently our stake has upped the number and duration of stake level meetings at the directive of the new stake president. HCs have been asked to attend the temple on a weekly basis, which is on top of other stuff that SP is asking of them. Seriously, I feel bad for the guy...but of course he loves it since he's building the kingdom...through meetings and temple attendance.

                      • I just listen to a youth speaker say, "um...you know..." 30 times. I didn't start counting until 3 minutes into his talk. So the grand total was probably well north of that number. Outside of that it was a decent talk.

I had the same experience on Friday except it was a PhD candidate presenting a paper at a conference I was attending.

                            • I learned in church today

Stake Conference this week. Last night at PH leadership mtg, the topic was interviews. It was generally a fairly mundane discussion about the different types of interviews PH holders give. But it got interesting/weird when the local mission president spoke. He talked about how he has given thousands of interviews over the years as a bishop at BYU and later in his home ward, as a SP and as a MP. He went on to tell about how in any interview, one of the purposes is to "scrub out the corners of their soul." He explained how he key to doing this is that when someone confesses something, to go back through every year of their life since the first time the problem happened and explore that. "What happened in the 7th grade. Tell me about that. Why happened in the 8th grade? Tell me about that." Do that all the way through the present day. This is how you scrub out the corners of their soul.

He went on to tell a story about when he was a bishop at BYU. A woman had stopped attending church after previously being very active. He called her in for an interview, during which she insisted that everything was fine and that she had recently become very busy with school and work and that had impacted her Sunday attendance. He looked at her, and suddenly felt inspired to tell her that she had become pregnant and had obtained an abortion. She then confessed that he was right.

He also told a story about a man to whom he wouldn't give a TR, because, in the TR interview, the man expressed that he didn't really like his EQP.

                              Very uplifting stuff.
