I agree, it's awesome, although I always felt a bit guilty for listening to it.

Agreed. It makes me feel nervous even now when I hear it, but for other reasons.

The song from that album that always disturbs me, however, is 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'. The song is going through the mind of a condemned man as he walks toward his execution. It is somewhat contemplative and philosophical in an existentialist way.

The lyric always gives me chills:

Spoiler for Hallowed Be Thy Name:

I'm waiting in my cold cell, when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time
'Cause at 5 O'clock they take me to the gallows pole, yeah
The sands of time for me are running low, running low

When the priest comes to read me the last rites
Take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me

Can it be that there's some sort of error
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Somebody please tell me that I'm dreaming
It's not easy to stop from screaming
But words escape me when I try to speak

Tears fall but why am I crying
After all I'm not afraid of dying
Don't I believe that there never is an end?

As the guards march me out to the courtyard
Somebody cries from a cell, 'God be with you'
If there's a God then why has He let me go?

As I walk my life drifts before me
Though the end is near I'm not sorry
Catch my soul, it's willing to fly away

Mark my words, believe my soul lives on
Don't worry now I have gone
Gone beyond to seek the truth, yeah, yeah

When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then you'll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion

      Yeah, hallowed be thy name
      Yeah, hallowed be thy name
      Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Those are my two favorite Maiden songs. Hands down.

My seminary teacher gave us the same shpiel but it was about him destroying his Black Sabbath. This was the lesson that got me interested in listening to Black Sabbath.

Funny how obsessing over relatively minor things piques your interest in them.

My son got a hold of my 'hard rock' playlist and started listening to AC/DC, Metallica, and Van Halen. I was initially concerned about exposing a 9-year old kid to that music, but I didn't make a big deal about it. He listened to it over and over for a month or two, but now he's back to 'normal', listening to what his older sisters like. Not that Lady Gaga is any better...

Some of the priests in my ward went to EFY over the summer and came back to give a report in priest quorum. One talked about how they learned they should only listen to uplifting music, to which the bishop encouraged them to throw away their bad music.

Two weeks later I asked one of the priests what he had done with his bad music and he said pretty much verbatim "I'll get rid of it when my dad gets rid of his". I just smiled.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

                Nice.

We had a really great talk today from a recently returned missionary. Some good stories about helping people and nothing crazy.

Primary is all sorts of awesomeness. You used the wrong emoticon. I hate children generally, but I liked primary.

I learned that the Stake President thinks Tithing Settlement is important enough to make sacrament meeting go over by 20 minutes.

If you chance to meet a frown,
                        Do not let it stay.
                        Quickly turn it upside down
                        And smile that frown away.

No one likes a frowning face.
                        Change it for a smile.

                        • We had an excellent sacrament meeting today. We had a single sister, never married, department chair professor and recent cancer survivor speak. She's an extraordinary woman and she gave a touching talk on gratitude.

thanks. It might wind up being fun especially if we can walk around the chapel and eat food. I teach 6-7 year olds, so I might teach the Puffy Check (I'd rather not, truthfully).

Apparently I am team teaching with another man. When the Second Counselor told me, I thought of Tim and felt compelled to ask whether I had to teach with the door open. Using sound judgment, I refrained from asking.
