But you somehow think it's weird that the church promote members using the name Bishop vs calling them John or whatever?Originally posted by Moliere View PostNot usually, even at church. We are friends and served in a bishopric together so I generally use his first name, especially in friendly chats in the hallway.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

When we had a new Bishop called a while back who was one of my friends, it seemed a little weird at first to me too. I was called to be one of his counselors. I went out of my way to refer to him as Bishop in every setting that it wasn't just us one on one - and even sometimes in those settings depending on what we were talking about and whether or not it involved him being Bishop. Partly just to respect the office, but also to remind myself that he carried a certain mantle and often was acting in a role other than being my friend.Originally posted by imanihonjin View PostI can't. Our Bishop is a really good friend of mine and was recently called. For the life of me, it is bizarre to call him by anything other than his first name.
It was also interesting to me to see his approach. He wouldn't go to the Bishop's office without wearing a shirt and tie. He once told me "it isn't about me - I'm just trying to respect the calling and what it represents. When I'm in that office, I've got to change my mindset and remember who I represent. And the uniform helps me do that."

In my ward, they're encouraging everyone to address all three of the elder's quorum presidency with "President". Kinda tough calling a 27 year old EQ second counselor "President Olsen".Originally posted by Moliere View PostThe stake president in the ward I visited this weekend spent a good five minutes telling the EQ that the brethren are emphasizing the use of “bishop” and “president” when addressing people at church in those respective callings. Utah wards, smh.

That is weird. It’s also weird to call the 12 year old deacons quorum president “President” as well as the YW class presidents when you are an older male that has nothing to do with those groups but I guess I should comply since some stake president said the brethren are pushing it.Originally posted by wapiti View PostThat's weird."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

And because it doesn't hurt you to show these younger kids that it is important to honor their callings.Originally posted by Moliere View PostThat is weird. I think the whole title thing is weird. Brother, sister, President, etc. I don't call the CFO of my company, Chief, or the President and CEO, President. I just prefer to be called by name and feel odd calling others by anything but their name.Originally posted by wapiti View PostWhy is that weird?

Calling by title is a perfectly normal thing in both government and religion. President, Senator, Governor, Speaker, etc. Pastor, Bishop, Father, Mother, Elder, etc. Not weird.Originally posted by imanihonjin View PostI think the whole title thing is weird.
