I learned in church today
Like many on here, we had stake conference this weekend. I learned that the promise of a new stake presidency is enough to intrigue many into attending such conference. I did not have to learn that it isn't enough to intrigue me. That's a whole lot of testimonies that I can already take a pretty good guess at. I did learn, via text, that one of the new councilors is the law partner of one of the outgoing councilors. Must be something about that office. But he's a personal injury guy, so that makes me wonder if confessing sins will be easier with his "that's not your fault" perspective on the world.
Even though I did not attend Sunday services, I did sacrifice two hours of my Saturday, (during game time!) to be a team player and attend priesthood leadership. I learned several things:
- I belong to one of the greatest stakes in the church
- Elder Michael John U. Teh has great Cougar football seats
- There have been few people on the Earth that have been more discriminated against than the Mormons
- There is no need to apologize to the world about polygamy. There is no need to apologize for any commandment of God. Ever. But you can say, "We just don't know why."
- When having your baptismal interview, an affirmative answer to any of these three questions will require you to be interviewed by the mission president: 1. Have you had an abortion? 2. Have you ever been convicted of a felony? 3. Have you ever had a homosexual encounter? I was familiar with the first two. The third one was a bit shocking. It's good that they're giving it the proper attention it needs.
Most of these "Things I learned" were spawned by a 30 minute Q&A with Elder Teh. (Seems like there's some marketing potential here.) The first question from the audience was "How can we be stalwart and steadfast when questioned about our stance on gays getting married without being offensive or confrontational? The answer should have been, "Personally, given your tone, I doubt it will ever be possible." The piece about discrimination and Mormons was contributed by a member of the outgoing stake president, and the future Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, to put into perspective how little Mormons discriminate against others. There isn't a group of people out there that is more sensitive to discrimination and the exclusion of others.
- I also learned that 1 hour and 55 minutes of cynicism and frustration of a battery draining ESPN game tracker app and someone you decided to turn the WiFi off for the meeting can be completely washed away by the closing prayer of a new convert. I had a companion on my mission from Casper, Wyoming. In his worthiness interview for his mission he was asked if he had ever had relations with an animal. One of the members of the stake came down to interview our new EQ counselor and asked what he looked like and I enjoyed telling him that he had very long hair(middle of his back) and a beard. I give the stake guy credit he didn't flinch and our guy was confirmed.Comment
