It's an online BYU-I program so adults can "go back to school" and finish their degree. I think it's actually a decent idea, but I'd hate to see it presented as a 5th Sunday lesson as the target audience is probably very limited."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

A cheap way for international students to get a degree. I think it is geared toward getting new members in struggling counties an education but I also think it's a way for the church to recruit new members with the lure of a degree.

I agree...it'd be much better as a fireside or even as a "hey, meet in the R.S. room for 20 min after church for a short presentation."Originally posted by Moliere View PostIt's an online BYU-I program so adults can "go back to school" and finish their degree. My ward routinely botches the 5th Sunday lessons."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I had to take family to the airport so I missed the first two hours of church. I ordinarily would have passed on Church altogether but I recently was called into YM and had to be there for the third hour because our advisor is out of town for work. I have some really great teachers. Today one of them taught the lesson on What is the Priesthood? He did as well as a 14 year old possibly could I thought. He was prepared, made assignments, had his iPad out and the July Ensign with the article on the priesthood. He shared his testimony and shared a story about one time when his mother was really sick and his dad gave her a blessing. His mother told him afterward that she can't wait until he turns 18 and be an Elder so he can give her blessings too. He said that has always stuck with him and helps him make good decisions because he wants to be an Elder to bless his mother someday. It was touching. I tried to find his mother afterward to tell her what an impressive young man she was raising but couldn't find her. I will be sure to tell her soon."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

We learned that the world and the church have never been more black and white than they are today. That Korihor was a member of the church and led people astray. We have Korihor's among us today and we need to be like the anti-nephi lehi's and cast them out from our midst."Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.

That's too bad, RCV. Sometimes I feel the same way, but we had a great sac meeting this last Sunday. Hang in there.Originally posted by RC Vikings View PostWe had one talk today where Walt Disney was mentioned at least six times and what a wonderful person he was and a second talk about over coming anxiety. Christ was never talked about once during either one of these talks, in fact I can't remember the last time I heard a talk about Christ in Sacrament meeting. A non-member visiting our ward for the first time would come out of there wondering what the hell that was. If I ever decided never to attend a meeting again it wouldn't be because of doctrine, it would be because I just don't get anything from the meetings. I try and listen to the talks and get involved with the lessons but I just come away with nothing. I feel like I attend just for the sake of attending and I've been doing it all my life but I want more from it. We are now getting the Pathway missionaries asking to share their stuff in our ward. I doubt my bishop will want them to take a whole 5th Sunday lesson as there are better things to discuss during that time. Firesides aren't really practical for this type of thing as our church building is too far away for most to go home and come back later that night. I like the idea of a seaparte SS meeting in which interested people can attend and if no one shows up, then so be it.Originally posted by DrumNFeather View PostI agree...it'd be much better as a fireside or even as a "hey, meet in the R.S. room for 20 min after church for a short presentation."

Yes, our ward has historically been bad at this but has been better of the course of the last year. It's somewhat the fault of the member and somewhat the fault of the bishopric. I know when our bishopric asks people to speak they make it clear that sacrament is a worship service and therefore their talk, while it has an assigned topic, should always be centered around Christ.Originally posted by RC Vikings View PostWe had one talk today where Walt Disney was mentioned at least six times and what a wonderful person he was and a second talk about over coming anxiety. I have a lot of other thoughts on this, which goes all the way back to the way I was brought up in the church, but that is a topic for another day."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Coming from SS pres and overseeing the implementation of Come Follow Me was interesting. Some teachers really embraced it. Others struggled with it. But coming over into YM has been a revelation in the way our ward does it. I am not sure if YW is the same way, but on the first Sunday of the month the quorum president presents the theme and outline topics and makes assignments for who gets to teach. Then that kid teaches that week. I didn't think it would work as well as it has. Sometimes I don't give the youth enough credit. But when I give them ownership over something they really try. It's encouraging to see as an adult leader.Originally posted by OceanBlue View PostSurfah, that is a very cool story. I'm still amazed at how these kids can give such great talks."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

In Priest Quorum presidency meeting, they set the teaching schedule for the next 3 months. (So really it is a rolling 3 month calendar.) What really has impressed me is that the First Assistant calls on the Tuesday evening before you are assigned to teach. Wants to make sure you remember, and that you will be there. He then asks if you are bringing treats!
