My daughter attended this on Saturday and was still buzzing on Easter.Originally posted by Moliere View PostPart of my frustration started on Thursday as I was asked by a coworker what Mormons do to celebrate Easter. He's Coptic Orthodox but was really just curious. I told him we don't do much other than have church and easter egg hunts. There's really nothing organized by the church, at least nothing that even sniffs at what is done for Christmas.
It made me wonder if the whole "anti-Catholic" messaging of the early/mid 1900s was what led to the complete shunning of the more formal traditions like Lent, Good Friday, etc. I might be wrong in that regard as that stuff was probably shunned at Joseph Smith's time with the avid Puritanism going on, but that didn't stop us from going all out at Xmas time. I do find it interesting that a lot of younger Mormons are adopting things like Lent to bring a bit more meaning back to the Easter holiday. I find that to be a good thing.
Although “Messiah” performances are most common during the Christmas season, Handel’s work was originally created for an Easter benefit concert. Now, nearly 275 years after that first performance, music groups around the globe continue to celebrate the life of Jesus Christ through the songs of “Messiah.”
In early March, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square announced that they would publicly perform the entire “Messiah” over Easter weekend (Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19) in the Tabernacle on Temple Square. The response was overwhelming. The enthusiasm for the concert, however, was greater than expected. All available tickets for both Friday and Saturday night were gone in less than eight minutes.http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...s-Messiah.htmlListeners who want to prepare for this weekend’s recording are encouraged to visit the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s website, where a full program, complete with lyrics and scripture references, is available.
“For those who are familiar with ‘Messiah,’ I hope that this will be a re-acquaintance with everything they’ve always loved,” Barrick said. “For those who have never seen the performance, I hope they can feel the spirit of Easter in a way they haven’t before.”One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

I believe religion has much inherent good and has born many good fruits.

Moliere, I suggest you talk to your Bishopric about the lack of Christ in your worship services, especially at Easter.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

They never listen to me

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I'm guessing that he has spirit testicles. Remember that gender is eternal and our spirit looks just like our body (see Brother of Jared story), so Lucifer has spiritual testicles.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postlol lucifer doesn't have a body"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. So what is the official scoop on fasting? I often forget on fast Sunday and eat breakfast anyway. I have a suspicion that my wife waits for me to make my breakfast and sit down, then right as I'm about to eat she reminds me that it is fast Sunday. I think she does this to get back at me for being married to me all these years. Additionally i dislike fasting, don't enjoy the experience, and would be fine never doing it again.
ive noticed a total lack of reference to fasting in the temple recommend interview.it doesn't seem to be a big part of church worthiness, but rather an individual tool one can employ if, for some reason, you find it helpful. Have you ever heard of or been subjected to church discipline to any degree as a result of not fasting?
Ps I have already eaten two egg sandwiches and two bowls of lucky charms for breakfast and nothing bad has happened.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Actually it has been a great day so far, even without the two egg sandwiches and bowls of lucky charms.Originally posted by Dwight Schr-ute View Post..but nothing good has happened either. Except for egg sandwiches and Lucky Charms, of course.
love egg sandwiches, though. This morning I did scrambled eggs with tomato and chili peppers on the side. Sometimes I do fried eggs instead of scrambled. If I go fried I like throwing a slice of ham or turkey on there, too.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Occasionally it helps me become a bit more spiritually sensitive, and the ward or group fast is an interesting way of promoting a communal sense of support for someone in need. But I don't have a great testimony of fasting, though I'm a consistent participant. But not today! We had a very physically demanding day yesterday, during which I supposedly burned around 4600 calories and my body's exhausted. Despite Mrs. PAC's mild protest, I have claimed a medical exemption from today's fast as I genuinely believe food is necessary for a solid recovery. Depending on how good the eggs, big bowl of berries and toast are, I may bear testimony of this later today.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostSo what is the official scoop on fasting? I learned that our new SP is a "WiFi off during stake conference" guy. (Yep, we attend stake conference.)Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
