  • Today I learned in sacrament meeting from a former member of MoTab that it's a sin not to sing the hymns as loudly as you can in sacrament meeting, even if you're completely tone deaf. He then suggested that it might not be the best idea to participate in ward choir if your voice isn't of a particular caliber.

Even though Elders are legally allowed to perform a marriage, in Utah the happy couple still needs a marriage license so Vegas still has a competetive edge in the quickie marriage department. If I recall correctly, there is a CHOI paragraph about how only Bishops should perform a marriage regardless of the fact that any Elder is legally capable of doing so although I'm too lazy too search for it.

      • Might be common knowledge, but I learned that there are virtual wards in China. Kind of interesting. RC might know of the family that taught me this. They are from Rexburg but living in China setting up nuclear power plants.

I bet they still can't get home teaching above 50%.

          • One of the things I really like about our ward is the heavy emphasis the bishopric places on YM/YW. Today was the biannual combined session when the bishop shows pictures of each YM and YW while we fill out an answer sheet with their names. He then provides the names with a tidbit or two about each kid. We can do this in one hour because we only have 36 in our youth programs, but with near 100% activity, due in part to said emphasis. Most everyone gets a very substantial majority right, and people go out of their way to say hi to the kids by name on Sunday. I got all but three, not bad for a curmudgeon with no youth of his own.

            • Apparently, in the wake of last evening's General Relief Society meeting, the term "Covenant Keeper" is going to be a new catch-phrase in the church.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

                • I came into Indianapolis this morning for a conference this week. I am not usually a stickler for church attendence while traveling, but I had missed last week and I don't like getting into the habit of skipping because I know I will enjoy that habit too much. So I hit up the only available sacrament meeting close to downtown which happened to be a singles ward. A young man you looked to be in his upper 20s shared his testimony admitting that he hadn't been in a while because he was struggling. He said he is a homosexual and has known this for 15 years or so and knows he can't do anything to change that but he also knows with all his heart the Church is true. He wants more than anything to get the Melchezidek Priesthood but can't because he said he can't honestly answer all the interview questions. He closed by asking that all would pray with him this weekend that we can all receive answers that will allow people like him live a happy live. I was deeply moved.

I am also not a testimony congratulator either, but after the meeting I sought him out briefly to shake his hand. I told him I really appreciated what he said and thought he was very brave. I promised I would pray with him this weekend.

Hey! I was asked to give the closing prayer in sac meeting today as well! I was taken completely off guard when the chorister abruptly shut the thing down after 1 verse, leaving me to climb over my 3 kids to the aisle and then make the silent walk of shame up from the back row of the chapel.

This should probably go in the sacrament meeting rant thread, but our sacrament meeting speakers today went as follows:

Speaker 1: the history of the BSA and the lds church from 1903-1933.

Speaker 2 : the history of the BSA and lds church from 1933-1946.

Speaker3 : the history of the BSA and the lds church from 1946 to the present.

This is the 3rd or 4th post, I'm remembering the elderly sick member giving the talk, and hope he's the next prophet.

If you can remember Chester, you are old enough for that hobble to look OK.

                              • My youngest went into our nursery last week for the first time. I have been undecided on trying for a 4th kid, but I miss my excuse to skip SS and Priesthood.
