  • I learned that I can surf CS during sacrament meeting and my husband won't give me the evil eye as long as his team just pulled off an amazing underdog victory over the #5 team in the country, and he wants to read about it.

Some combination of all the above, the proportions varying per individual?
Well put. When I was EQP in my branch in Omaha I had no desire to have the calling an if it weren't for a combination of some of the above reasons I would have declined. I honestly don't know what my response to a call to be bishop would be...I really hope I never have to find out.

I think there's a big difference in the church and these types of things in Utah vs in the "mission field". Where I live, no man will ever be a bishop without years of butt kissing and positioning. That's why I do a when I hear a comment like yours about no one would ever want to be a bishop. And I'm fine with people wanting to be a bishop. It's better someone is in that position that wanted to than someone that didn't.

I love you Jay, but sometimes you are a cynical POS.

Wow, I hope POS isn't short for piece of shit. That might be a little strong.

I view it as a term of endearment.

I think I was the first person to call you that.

In other words, years of attending all three hours of church every Sunday, accepting every calling they're extended, doing their hometeaching every month, volunteering for assignments, etc. You see that as butt-kissing because you don't believe and can't imagine acting in a similar manner, but some guys believe in this stuff 100% and see it as simply being a faithful member of the church.

in this counselor's defense, he declared this after he had been called. It was during the first testimony meeting he conducted. He spoke for 30 minutes before giving up the pulpit.

I can handle piece of crap, but somehow when someone lays the POS on me, my feelings are hurt.

I guess you'll just have to trust me when I say I really don't want to be a bishop.

OK. Let's scratch the word buttkissing and even positioning. The question is whether someone in an active ward in Utah who would get called to bishop would ever view the bishop calling as something they wouldn't want. I don't believe that happens.

Fair point. I would agree with that for the most part.

I know several bishops/former bishops who would have prefered to not do it, but they accepted when asked.
