  • Thanks for the info. Not sure why this was an issue for them but they seemed to take pride in the fact their lineage goes way back (But they are inactive). So I think they took offense to it.. But it may just be another way to be irked..

They were very nice and cordial and I got a good vibe from them. So we'll see. I think they just didn't get a good enough answer to resolve this issue. I am not sure they ever will..

Hopefully in time that will be a non-issue.. I did find it odd...

So I met with a inactive family who moved here a year ago (From Seattle actually). The couple are members and have been their whole life. But have been inactive for a while. They have a 13 year old daughter who has not been baptized and were told that on their record it will list them as a "Convert" instead a "Baptized member".

My Bishop said this is true but I wasn't really given a good reason except that if a child is not baptized prior to turning 9 they are then considered a covnert.. I think this irks the parents and I can ssee why..

I don't understand the reason behind this.. Seems stupid imo. Sure they should be taught by the missionaries etc. But desigante them a convert?? I don't get it..
You didn't mine for 9-year olds on your mission? What kind of missionary were you?

They have to make the cut somewhere. Part of me feels it is a way to bolster convert numbers, but another part of me thinks its a legit distinction. You have to draw the line somewhere. My niece is painfully shy and refused to get baptized until she was 11 because she didn't want to be in front of people (she lives in Gilbert, AZ, where they baptize dozens of kids once per month from the stake). She had to take the lessons before being baptized, which I thought was funny.

      This family sounds thin skinned.

Why didn't the bishop just let the family do a private baptism? Seems preferable to waiting three years.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

True Story: When I was Ward Missionary in my ward we were teaching this woman who was very shy about getting baptized in front of people. We thought the missionaried had resolved this issue but it came roaring back right before her baptism. Due to this she almost pulled out and the Bishop and MP were called to see if we could do a "closed baptism". They said it was OK and they allowed the witnesses (Myself and the WML) to be inside the on the steps to view it.. The Bishop had his head popped in from the curtain but was out of view for everyone else. Even so she still had reservations and it took my wife doing some serious convincing before she got in..

            Falafel,

You can't go about making an exception for a painfully shy person when the stake already has a POLICY.

Yeah, that is odd. Most bishops I've known are great guys and willing to bend over backwards to help anyone. Our family has done private baby blessings and private baptisms before in spite of stake/church policies.

              • Are we not all supposed to be converted?

Growing up in the midwest, it was over two hours to the nearest LDS baptism font. My branch did baptisms at a local Lutheran Church where the baptism font was behind the pulpit and was all glass - like a giant aquarium. It was awesome! But my parents decided that I would be baptized in Zion while on vacation in a private family ceremony.

Despite this era of correlation, I still view all of my children's baptism as private, family ceremonies. In my ward, the family had to do everything for the baptism; scheduling, filling the font, music, talks, etc. Once we had to put the meeting on hold just so a member of the Bishopric could be present.

My wife and her sister were both baptized in the Jordan River. They lived in Amman for a few years growing up and that's where the branch did baptisms.

Did they have raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about their loins; and was their meat locusts and wild honey, as well?

I think it was a white jump suit. I'll have to check.

My siblings were baptized at night in the Persian Gulf with the witnesses holding flashlights to make sure they were all the way under. It was at night so no one else could see us and raise the ire of the tolerant Saudi government.
