Who wants to make a poll with the same options entitled:

"Which of these Mormon tenets do you have a testimony of and have helped you in your life?"

I bet that thread would be boring with little to no discussion.

I think that's right. Where it gets frustrating for me is the couple in our circle of friends who always put the pooh-pooh on going to see some good movies on group date nights based solely on them being R-rated, or scrambling to put the R-rated DVDs in the drawer when certain family members stop by the house.

I think it is TOTALLY fine to have a no rated R movie rule. For the most part, I can't think of a single rated R movie that would be appropriate according to what the church preaches is wholesome and good.

Nixing out rated R flicks is a good way to avoid what some consider inappropriate.

I was not aware until you pointed it out, or I had forgotten. That is interesting. It isn't always easy to read the tea leaves.

I bet if you were to ask the poll question asked here in Sunday school there would be little to no discussion and it would be pretty uncomfortable. You don't have an expectation that this setting and that one serve the same purpose do you?

Not a single one? Have you not seen many? I'll admit that most don't fit that category.

I would guess the reason they removed it is because there are more members outside of the US than in. A rated R movie in the US may be PG 13 in Sweden (or wherever). The point is to govern ourselves and not watch things that are inappropriate, and we know what that is.

Nope, I can't think of a single one that would be in line with the teachings of the church. I have seen plenty of rated R movies. Swearing is not in line with the teachings of the church. Sexual content is not in line with the teachings of the church. Violence is not in line with the teachings of the church.

Like I said, I've seen rated R movies. I saw District 9 last night. I'm not judging. But trying to justify rated R movies as being ok within the context of church doctrine and principles is just silly.

Oh, I can think of quite a few that are uplifting and inspiring and are compatible with what I understand of the gospel. To think that the overall message is negated and turned into something evil because of a few cuss words or bloody scenes is a mindset that I would consider to be silly. Equally silly is the notion that there is any kind of consistency in the movie rating process and that it can be used as a reliable guide.

I remember a sister getting up in F&T a few years back and bearing her testimony of how inspired she was by the movie Saving Private Ryan. Of course, she started her testimony by ensuring us that she had watched the Clean Flicks edited version. Nobody seemed to bat an eye. I chuckled at the irony.

I'm not saying that they can't be uplifting and inspiring. I've seen plenty of rated R movies that are just that. All I'm saying is that based on what we know of the gospel, things that make a move rated R are not gospel appropriate. No way can it be justified. I just watch movies I want to watch .I know some are not gospel appropriate, but I'm ok with that and I don't justify.

I am 1000% in agreement with this. I watch numerous rated R movies, but I don't pretend to cloak myself in some morally justified argument in doing so.
