What do you mean by salvation? I find it hard to believe that obedience, at least striving to be obedient, is not necessary for salvation.Originally posted by clackamascoug View PostNothing on the list is "mandatory" for salvation. Observance of the list is extra credit that brings with it blessings, that assist our daily personal lives.

I'll put it back in your court. Which of the above tenants would exclude exaltation (salvation) if not practiced perfectly.Originally posted by Maximus View PostWhat do you mean by salvation? I find it hard to believe that obedience, at least striving to be obedient, is not necessary for salvation.
In my mind salvation is at least the Telestial Kingdom, but I actually meant the Celestial Kingdom when I wrote my initial statement.
BTW... How many of you would be comfortable in not going to the Celestial Kingdom. To me it would seem like a huge responsibility, kind of like being a Bishop, of which I have to admit not wanting to ever bear that burden.

Did it ever occur to you that perhaps those in the secular world are the pod people?Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostThese requirements, most of which don't do much to relieve suffering in the world, are much about control. Think about how wearing garments and avoiding drink marks you as a pod person in the everyday secular world."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

If I was LDS, I would be able to do the FHE (although having other people to do it with at the current moment is problematic) and the tithing (direct deposit). Daily prayer, maybe. Monthly temple attendance, perhaps. Everything else, nope."I don't know the origin of said bitch booming."-Art Vandelay

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

For where I am in life right now I'd say temple attendence, though I never regret going once I have gone."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

I'm on the board of an independent cinema. I can't do my board work while avoiding rated "R" films. We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

My monthly temple attendance is not where I'd like it to be. We're maybe once a quarter now. If getting to the DC temple wasn't such a pain in the ass and we didn't have a newborn it'd be easier. I know we live with my parents, but going to the temple here, because who knows what the beltway will be like, can be a half a day thing. We were much better about it in Utah and went about once a month. I love the temple and not being as dilligent in going makes me feel guilty.
My daily scripture study sucks. It's something I have struggled with since the mission. A few times a year I make a concerted effort for a week or two or three and then it becomes sporadic again. I will say though that I do end up looking at the scriptures online quite a bit during some of our discussions here in the Foyer. Easily 3-4 times a week. But I don't count that as it's not dedicated scripture study. I am typically not bothered by this except during the "are we doing all we can be doing?" moments in Church.
Considering the last movie I watched in the theater was Star Trek rated R movies shouldn't be an issue. But we'll Redbox or netflix something. We just saw Hurt Locker over the weekend for example. When we moved to Virgina though we sold all over rated R DVDs to Media Play in Murray for whatever that's worth. I can compartmentalize this pretty easily and don't feel any tinges of guilt over it.
Everything else on the list has been pretty easy for me thus far."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

Last year I went to the temple when my adopted nephew was sealed to his family. Excluding that, I haven't been to the temple in almost 3 years. I went in Dallas right before we moved here. It was hard enough (motivation wise) in Dallas and Memphis when we were 20 minutes from the temple to get a sitter and make the trip. Now that the temple is three hours away, I don't even think of it as a possibility, though if I were more devout I could certainly make it work.Last edited by marsupial; 05-27-2010, 06:20 AM.What's to explain? Tithing and Sabbath day observance.....and well I guess the WoW as a psuedo commandment (that darn Emma!). Those are probably the only two that are actual commandments, the others (well some of them) are guidelines to help us spiritually. But saying "practiced perfectly" has to imply the fact that even if you slip you can be forgiven.Originally posted by clackamascoug View PostI'll put it back in your court.
