You know, I really dont mind you or SU, but sometimes I wish you two would quit crapping on threads like this. See, everybody that posts much here knows that you two think the church is poppycock. Really, we get it. The thread premise isnt for you. It doesnt call for anyone that ridicules the church to ridicule it. It only asks that if you are practicing now would you be comforbtable in the 19th century chruch. That is an intereting question that is now lost to the not so interesting and all too often repreated backslapping routine between you two.
When I was a kid we had a bunch of ducks. EVerywhere they walked they crapped, making a mess. It was annoying. We used to turn them onto the grass to eat bugs but they would always crap on the sidewalk, where they had no reason to be. I always hoped they would stay of the sidewalk. Sadly, they very rarely did. But I always had that same hope.
There is no way in the world that my wife would "make" me take another wife. She has made it very clear that if ever want multiple wives, none of them will be her. I comfort her by letting her no that not only do I not want multiple wives, I'm not even sure I want one.
I think the wives would get the better end of the deal in todays age. In fact, I could see me getting home from work and them handing me the baby while they head out for a girls night out. I'd be left home alone with 10 screaming kids to feed, bathe, and put to sleep.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Now there's a guy after my own heart.
I have this fantasy about my future. I live in a singlewide down by the river. I live on soc sec, and disability, bringing in $1800 a month. I've a easy chair and a LED TV with DVR, and I golf everyday, including Sunday, and am friendly with the widow next door.
I'm finally getting around to reading Rough Stone Rolling. I've asked the following question in my mind over and over...could I really hang with the 19th century version of this church? I don't know the answer to that question...but the whole speaking in tongues thing weirds me out a bit.
So what do you all think...are you 21st century Mormons only? Or could you do the 19th century version of the church as well?
For me, it probably depends on when in the 19th century your talking about. I think I wouldn't have too many problems post 1847. If I am to believe the family stories about most of my "great great _____s), the amount of leeway given wouldn't have made it too difficult. They were too poor to practice polygamy for long. A fair amount of them enjoyed some liberties with the WOW. And community games of chance were frequently played on the sabbath. But, they provided a helping hand to the emigrating saints and apostles as they arrived in town. I think the emphasis was on the gathering of the saints as opposed to perfecting the saints.
Now before this time might have been a tough one for me. Its tough to judge my conceptions of thought of in today's world with that of those in the 19th century world.

Just to be clear, this is all my opinon and reflects neither board policy nor is it an official censure. Just my opinion.
The post asked a question. I gave my answer. That you live in suspended disbelief in belief of an antiquated and untrue system of religion is not my problem. Thanks for not making it an official censure.

In the same spirit of mutual understanding and respect for differing beliefs, that you will burn in hell for shitting on everything that you once held to be true isn't my problem either.
