Wow! Why are they able to only move that much with that much study? It seems like it would be better to just give up if your score was too low.

Its because its not about knowing facts and all about knowing the patterns used in the questions. So if you are never able to pick up on the general patterns and thought processes tested by the LSAT, you'll never improve. For some people, its not something you can just memorize. Conversely, some people already think that way, and they start out with a really high first test score.

Generally speaking, people never really move higher than 5 or 10 points higher than their first attempt.

The same is true for all the standardized tests - LSAT, GMAT, SAT, ACT, etc. In general, they are measures and differentiators of General Intelligence (a very high correlation between standardized test scores and IQ), but each test has it's own structural irregularities that can be learned and your score improved. GMAT asks 'data sufficiency' questions that if you'd never seen them before, could definitely throw you for a loop. ACT rewards blind guessing on questions, but SAT rewards guessing only if you can eliminate one answer. LSAT has logic questions that once you figure them out aren't that tough, but without practice could be very tricky (and time consuming - which hurts your score since it's a timed test). Etc.

The classes / study programs for those tests DO increase scores, but only because they eliminate poor performance do to unfamiliarity with the quirks of the test. And they're not going to move you from University of Southwestern Arkansas LSAT scores to Harvard Law scores...

Repeat takers of the LSAT usually only improve by a point or two, if they improve at all. But there can be about a ten point gap between a test taker who approaches the test for the first time and the actual test. My first test was ten points lower than my actual LSAT score.

Once, just for fun, my dad, who is a quite successful attorney, sat down with me to do one of the logic games sections of the test early into my studying for the LSAT. On this particular section, I missed six question. He got six questions right.
