  • Remember to show up for tithing settlement

Today and next Saturday I am doing tithing settlement fro 8:00-6:00. I just had two families no show on me. Now I will have to see them sometime later this month. Enough complaining, just try and remember to show up at the appointed time for your bishop's sake.

What is the true purpose of tithing settlement? Can't that be taken care of during a temple reccomend interview? Or, if when perusing your report for the year, you find that you are short, wouldn't that be a good time to see the bishop to settle the discrepancy? I don't get it.

I agree. I find it to be one of the unnecessary rituals we do.

Hey Art, what happens after the settlement window closes? Do bishops report to the stake presidency that x-percent of their active members showed up, and y-percent are full payers? Does he commit you to upping both numbers?

I showed up on time, even early. Bishop was running behind schedule. Stay on target Bishop Vandelay. Make sure you have a clock in your office

              I agree as well.

In conjunction with tithing settlement, there is a form that the Bishop/Clerk completes that indicates the tithing status (full, partial, exempt) for every member of the ward that gets submitted to Salt Lake. But I don't know what it means.

The only important part to me is the donor statements that are generated for tax purposes in January. Why can't we just hand those out and save ourselves a lot of time and trouble in December (and, more recently, November too)?

I've never understood the trouble people have with tithing settlement. For me it's never taken long and has never been that bothersome. It's what 5 minutes long, 10 minutes max? As a child I thought it cool to go with my entire family to settle my tithes. I think that set a great example for me to pay a full and honest tithe and the importance of sacrifice.

I just find it very unnecessary. Especially to get all dressed up on a Saturday, drive over, say "yes" and drive home.

I find tithing settlement vitally important.

This year we were able to reduce our rate and got a settlement of 8% with our bishop.

I'm sure you could regale me with testimony building stories of the infinite blessing of being a bishop -- but 10 hours on Saturdays devoted to no-shows? I'm sorry, but I'd hate your life. I admire your dedication, sir.

Last year during sss I was doing clerk stuff and bishop called me in and asked if I was full tithe payer. two seconds. Since ward just got split though I had to send new wards paperwork in diffrent file membership info in other binder during tithing settlement.

In my ward if you don't go, the bishop will call us and just ask over the phone. I have been trained to not go, and just wait for the phone call.

I don't have a problem going, except that they are always behind and what should take 10 minutes usually takes 30. I do have a problem with demanding the additional time of bishops, counselors, and clerks during the busiest time of year for most folks for something that, on the surface, seems unnecessary.

I haven't seen or heard an explanation yet on the deeper importance of tithing settlement.

I never go, and have never gone. I will let the bishop declare for me. The lord knows if I am a full tithe payer or not.
