Update: I just saw my bishop at the grocery store with his son who is in my Teachers Q. I said hi and then they asked about some snacks I was buying for HFN Jr's basketball team. I said "Since I am a full tithe payer I am blessed to buy the name brand snacks." I am counting that this year, I won't even bother taking his phone call.

I plan on continuing the trend I started last year with my Bishop: Drive-by T-Sett. I think there is a thread on it in the archives, actually.
Last year I just told the Obispo after Sacrament that I was a full-tithe payer. He said ok and we all went on with our lives. Tomorrow I will attempt the same approach again.
My days of trucking back to the chapel and dragging everyone else along are over before they ever began.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Went today. Our Bishop was actually ahead of schedule. Our appointment was for 12:45 and we got in and out by 12:40. During the settlement, our 16-year-old asked to no one in particular why we have tithing settlement. I gave her the stink eye.
We all reported full.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Our Ex Sec calls to remind people about their appointments. This result in few no shows and at least gives a heads up if people won't be able to make it in.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostToday and next Saturday I am doing tithing settlement fro 8:00-6:00. I just had two families no show on me. Now I will have to see them sometime later this month. If Joseph Smith's parents had given him the stink eye when he was asking people which church was true, this internet forum wouldn't exist. I imagine tithing settlement is one of those traditions that started back in the olden days when people used to give the bishop chickens and eggs for tithing. It has just continued today.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostWhat is the true purpose of tithing settlement? Can't that be taken care of during a temple reccomend interview? Or, if when perusing your report for the year, you find that you are short, wouldn't that be a good time to see the bishop to settle the discrepancy? I don't get it.
We obviously have to report our tithing status but it's a tradition to do this through meeting personally with the bishop. I could be done another way but I have yet to meet a bishop that doesn't like doing it. Not that the bishop likes the time committment it takes, but often times the families that do show up for tithing settlement are the families that the bishop does not meet with regularly during the year. He has a chance to give them counsel as a family and to really see if they need anything.
I can only imagine that after all the issues a bishop deals with, he probably likes to sit down with a family and have a nice chat for 5 minutes and then have the family declare a "full-tithe" status. Must be nice to have a couple Sundays a year where many of these meetings are more uplifting than other interviews he has to do.
That being said, it's a tradition and could easily be done differently. I'd be more inclined to hold it in January after the holidays are over or to spread it out during the year (although it is nice to get it over with in one month)."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Tithing settlement is a waste of everyone's time. It will go away when the pre-boomers are all gone from the Q12."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

Since they did the barcode recommend two years ago in NOvember my recommend expired. Got it renewed today and declared tithing status as well during sunday school. Still need to see Sp member. Our bishop said he can't declare full for us only partial if you don't show up to tithing settlement. I seen it done over the phone though and in halls. But if you don't show up he can't declare you full tithing payer and you have to forfeit your recommend.

Either your Bishop is a hard ass, or this policy is not enforced throughout the church.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I've always enjoyed tithing settlement. It's very little bother and is an excellent time to reinforce in our children's minds the principles underlying tithing. Wen else can the entire family sit on the bishop's office together under pleasant circumstances? I still remember going with my parents when I was just a little boy, and some of the things my bishops taught me at the time. I think those of you who find it such an annoyance are not seeing the forest.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

you are free to make an appointment with the Bishop at any time during the year. You can invite your entire family. You can also invite the Bishop to your home at any time during the year.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostI've always enjoyed tithing settlement. Settling tithing, which is a matter of temple recommend worthiness, should not be done in a group setting. It is inappropriate and will likely eventually be changed.
It is odd that of all the Gospel principles to reinforce, the Church only formalizes the one wherein it gets paid cash. Why is there no WoW year end interview, or Chastity Year End interview, or any other Gospel principle year end interview?
It is a bizarre practice that definitely has some ancillary benefits, but at its core is anachronistic and inappropriate. They should just change the name to year-end ecclesiastical stewardship meeting and skip the tithing part of it altogether. That would make more sense to me.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Since we live 200 yds from the chapel, it is no big deal to go and visit with the bishop for 5 minutes. We did ours today and were in and out in five minutes. The family before us however went twenty minutes over.
I may be small, but I'm slow.

Keep in mind that only (or most of the time for those who hate absolutes) full-tithe payers ever show up to declare anyway so the kids get to see their parents declare a full tithe.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postyou are free to make an appointment with the Bishop at any time during the year. Here's an interesting question. Where in the handbook does it say the bishop has to hang a signup sheet on his door and sit around every Sunday while meeting with the families the way it is currently done? It doesn't. The Bishop has to meet with the families and the families have to declare their tithing status but it can be done different ways. Our traditions are too ingrained in our beings to think of different ways to do tithing settlement. We revert back to the way it was done for the past decade."Discipleship is not a spectator sport.
